Mild or very mild start, turned unsettled second week

Sun 9th Storm Ciara brought severe gales and flooding..Shrewsbury area had lots of fallen trees, N Wales much flooding, highest gust Aberdaron 93mph, CC 86mph.  33.7mm rain here at Lwn the wettest Feb day recorded (beating 32.2mm 14-2-14). Capel Curig wettest in the UK with 122.6mm! Some places reached 14c in the warm sector of the low such as 14.1c Newport, Salop, widely it was 12 or 13c.

Sat 15th/Sun 16th Storm Dennis brought severe gales and copious rain and flooding, particular to Wales & the Marches where many places had above 50mm, with hillier areas having widely above 100mm and locally over 200mm. Here at Lwn the 24 hour total to 0900 was 61.8mm thus becoming the wettest February day (beating 33.7mm from just one week ago!), also it was the second wettest day recorded here (after 80.6mm 12-1-18). The low contained a considerable warm sector with maxima in the night up to 14c and widely above 12c (Hereford max 13.8c, CL 13.5c).

Note: no Capel Curig data available, but Snowdonia would have had well over 100mm!

Rest of the month remained unsettled, wet and windy at times and often mild but some rather cold snaps with wintry showers in places.



Nature notes

Mid month first proper Daffs seen in bloom near Llandovery.

Thrushes singing well most dawns of late...

Mid to late month: First celandines flowering in garden, first Crocuses; plenty of Daffs in bloom month end

Hedgerows and shrubs coming into leaf in many cases.
Quite a few slugs are active at night with lack of frost this month.

Not been many Fieldfare or Redwing this very mild Winter.

Plenty of Gorse bloom month end.


Feb 2020 summary


Exceptionally wet and very mild; sunshine varied between rather dull and rather sunny

Much of the Midlands had over 300% of the average Feb rainfall while virtually all locations at least doubled their averages.

Upland areas of Wales exceeded 500mm with few locations getting below 100mm.
For England & Wales and the UK as a whole this was the wettest February on record (UK average 209.1mm) see:

At Coventry it was the wettest Feb since 1977 (170.6mm) while here at Lwn it was only the wettest for 6 years (2014 had 287.4mm).

Most places were between 2 and 3c above the average so another very mild Winter month. 

Most places saw little or no snow this month as per the whole of Winter 2019/20!

Winter 2019/20 summary

Very mild and very wet; sunshine generally around average, though some places quite sunny

As is often the case these days a mild and virtually snowless Winter with few hard frosts (thus ensuring a severe, snowy Winter 2020/21!).
The lowest reading here at Lwn was a rather modest -7.7c and this at the start of December, at Coventry the minimum was a mere -2.1C for the whole of the Winter!
All areas saw a very wet and unsettled Winter although here at Llanwnnen it was only the wettest Winter since 2015/ 16 (698.8mm).
