Initially chilly, more especially over the Midlands, soon mild with rain at times:

Tue 2nd mild or very mild air pushed north, max Hereford 13.5c, CL & Coventry 12.3c, Trawsgoed 11.8c, Lwn 10.7c, Valley 9.6c, Nottingham 7.7c.

Bitterly cold second week ensues...

Mon 8th snow showers in places, streamers off the N Sea impacted locally though...Rugby area in a sweet spot am gave 5 -7cm only a little by that time to Coventry, Brum & Leicester..although by evening Coventry has a few cms too.

Tue 9th max 1.2c Lwn the coldest day for two years (1.0c Jan 2019)...

Thu 11th very cold week but not much snow most places, maxima have been since 8th generally 0c to +3c, although a few spots have had an ice day or two (Coventry max 0.0c 9th); nights not so cold due to cloud and wind until last night when coldest places over Wales and Midlands -7c or so..Braemar in Scotland, over a deep snow cover, min -22.9c being the coldest UK temperature since December 1995! Min last night Llanwnnen -7.1c (it achieved this by midnight after which more of a breeze and up to -4c); other min Nottingham -6.6c, Coventry -5.8c, CL -5.7c, Shobdon -4.8c, Trawsgoed -4.6c, Aberporth -3.6c, Mumbles -0.9c, so all locations sub zero quite unusual. Bitterly cold in the wind today, max Lwn +0.2c the coldest day since the 'Beast from the East' of March 2018 (when max -2.3c 1st). Other max Tirabad -1.5c, CC 0.0c, Shobdon +0.2c, Aberporth 0.5c, CL 0.8c, Coleshill & Shawbury 1.5c, Valley 3.2c.

Sat 13th last proper day for the cold spell with a little snow in places (chiefly Wales), maxima to 1800 Tirabad, Powys -1.4c, Shawbury -0.4c, Coventry 0.0c, Nottingham 1.0c, Lwn 1.1c, Aberporth 1.6c Mona 4.6c, temperatures then started to rise with Mona at 6.0c and Shawbury up to 0.7c by midnight.

Much milder from mid month and unsettled:

Fri 19th to Sat 20th a very wet event here at Lwn; 54.7mm daily total 19th to 0900 the second wettest Feb day here (61.8mm last year 15th) and the fourth wettest day of any month; almost 90mm falling over the two days and with 141.8mm for the past week which was one of the wettest recorded here. Much flooding across the local area and wider across Wales, Carmarthen badly affected yet again; Many parts of WW had above 50mm with highest totals around Beacons, where perhaps nearer 200mm for the 2 days, while most of the Midlands away from Herefordshire saw only small amounts; 24 hour totals to 0900 20th: CC 54mm, Trawsgoed 41mm, Aberporth 28mm, Hereford 12.2mm, Mumbles 10.2mm, Coleshill 4.2mm, Shawbury 1.0mm, CL 0.4mm. Maxima CC 12.8mm; 24 hours to 2100 Libanus, Powys 70mm, ROW 19mm, Market Bosworth 1.4mm; max temps Wellesbourne 13.4c, Nottingham 13.1c, Coventry 12.9c, CC 12.8c, Hereford 11.7c,  Lwn 10.8c, Aberdaron 9.9c.

Mon 21st Derek said that Llyn y Fan Fach in Carmarthenshire had 145mm rain over the weekend!

Very mild since cold spell ended last weekend, with most places max in double digits past week now..

Wed 24th very mild indeed especially Midlands; overnight minima widely above 10c, here at Llanwnnen the low of 10.9c made it the mildest February night recorded here (beating 10.6c 23/02/12). Other minima Pershore 12.6c, Coventry 11.9c, Trawsgoed 11.3c, Lwn 11.1c, Shobdon 10.9c, Aberdaron 8.2c. Max topped 60f parts of Midlands (Pershore College 16.5c (62f), Coventry & Nottingham 16.0c, Market Bosworth 15.4c, Hereford 13.8c, Trawsgoed 12.7c, Lwn 11.9c, Aberdaron 8c; CC 49.6mm rain wettest in UK.

Fine, dry end to Winter 2021 with some frosty nights:

Thu 25th WW nice and sunny for a change! Aberdaron 9.8c, Aberporth 8.1 hrs, Lwn est 8 hrs, Shobdon 7.2 hrs, Coventry 4.6c, Nottingham 4.5 hrs

Sun 28th frosty night as low as -4c (mins CC & Pershore -3.6c, Trawsgoed -2.3c, Nottingham -0.3c, Mumbles 4.7c; then a lovely sunny day max up to 14c; Lwn from min -4.3c to max 12.8c with 10 hours unbroken sunshine, it was the mildest and sunniest day of Winter 2021; other max Trawsgoed 13.6c, Perhore College 12.2c, Nottingham 11.0c, Aberporth 9.3c; sunshine Aberdaron 10.2 hrs, Wellesbourne 10.0 hours, Aberporth 9.7 hrs, Nottingham 9.8 hrs, Coventry 9.1 hrs, Shawbury 5.3 hrs


Nature notes

Thu 4th several Song Thrush in good voice Lampeter Uni.

Early month plenty of Bluebell spikes now. 

Mid month a few Daffs now out locally.

Tue 16th very active Hedgehog back lawn noticed by the dog and scurred away quickly when inspected by myself, good to see they seem to have survived the cold of last week.

Dawn chorus late month...

Sun 21st dusk chorus lots of S Thrush and a few M Thrush and Blackbird.

Mon 22nd Forestry: Goshawk, the usual brief glimpse of one flying away low between the trees; Foxglove foliage that had lasted since late Summer/ Autumn scorched brown by freezing winds of a fortnight ago, already though fresh green leaves making an appearance from within; dusk chorus of Song Thrush.

Thu 25th driving to Aberystwyth plenty of Daffs out along coast now.

Month end first Daffs out over the road this is the usual time for them.

Fri 26th Celandines in flower river bank Lampeter Uni.

Sun 28th quite a few Celandines now out inc one in the garden; plenty of Daffs now in bloom and plenty of bird song.
