Tue 8th maxima Trawsgoed 13.6c, Newport, Salop 13.5c, Pershore 13.3c, Lwn & Shobdon 11.8c, CC 10.3c.

Fri 9th first fairly widespread frost of the month, mimima Shawbury -3.1c, Lwn -2.7c; colder but bright by day with a few showers (wintry for hills); temperatures nearer average, generally 7 - 9c (MH max 9.7c, Llanwnnen & Pershore 8.8c, Shobdon 6.9c, CC 5.9c.

Turned more unsettled, wet and windy at times towards mid month:

Sat 12th - Sun 13th a wet weekend, several inches of rain parts of Wales - the first really substantial falls since December, over 50mm around the Preselis of Pembrokeshire for example during Sunday alone according to several PWS there. Whitechurch, Pembs 38.6mm fell 13th, wettest place in the UK officially.

Mid month: a rather dull and very mild month to date for most, a few spots having had above average sun, all areas above average rainfall-wise.

Wed 16th  A windy but very mild day as named storm 'Dudley' passed close to Scotland (CC gusts to 81mph, Aberporth 70mph, Shawbury 52mph, Coventry & Trawsgoed 43mph, Lwn 42mph); some rain, but sunny intervals Midlands, maxima Pershore College 17.2c (warmest in UK), Hereford 16.0c, Coleshill & Coventry 15.3c, Nottingham 13.9c, Trawsgoed 13.2c, Aberporth & Lwn 12.5c, Mumbles 11.1c.

Fri 18th  named storm 'Eunice' brought damaging winds although much of Wales and the Midlands escaped the worst of it. Strongest winds along the south Wales coast and more exposed western coasts, max gusts Mumbles 88mph, Aberdaron 84mph, Pembrey Sands 83mph, Aberporth 81mph, Baginton Airport, Coventry 68mph, Lwn 63mph, CL & Hereford 60mph, Trawsgoed 58mph, Shawbury 53mph, Coventry (Bablake school) 48mph; 63mph here at Lwn being equal second highest gust recorded here, surprisingly few trees brought down locally nor in Warwickshire apparently. The decision was made the day before the storm to close all schools and public transport in Wales being an unprecedented action. The low only started to develop out to the WSW of Ireland yesterday and by Friday night was over Denmark!
Max gusts Fri 18th

Sun 20th another named storm 'Francis' (the third in a week) that mainly affected the north, gusts inland across Wales & Midlands generally reaching 40 - 50mph but over 70mph for exposed coasts.

Sun 27th a fine and sunny weekend maxima 10 - 12c so quite Spring-like out of the wind. Virtually unbroken sunshine in places; Nottingham 10.1 hrs, Wellesbourne 9.6 hrs, Coventry 9.4 hrs, Aberdaron 9.2 hrs, Lwn est 7.5 hrs, Shobdon 5.4 hrs.

After a much drier past week a soggy final day of the month for Wales in particular (over an inch in places).

Nature notes

Tue 2nd Aberystwyth several Song Thrush and a Blackbird in good voice..

Early month: Song Thrushes singing remarkably well as though it were late March (one in particular out the back singing its heart out daily even in the wind and rain!). Quite a few Tits calling and Wrens bursting into song too.

Plenty of Snowdrops first week.

Dolaeron, Aberaeron Swift intervention looking successful, the new owner of the house being renovated is making some suitable gaps for them under the eaves, I only noticed them there last Summer!

Lots of Daisies in flower Uni grounds (have been some all Winter)..the cherry still has some blossom (since December)...Hazel catkins now long.

Mid month Primroses starting to come into flower.

Sat 19th Forestry surprisingly no trees seem to have been felled by storm Eunice (63mph gusts at Lwn so 70mph plus up here?); Thrushes singing really well now.

Sat 19th Blackbirds singing well at Llanybydder and home this evening.

Mon 21st first Celandine flowers Neaudd lane. Two large beech trees blown down by the storm Friday, just around the bend before the farm and exposed to the west. They were close together within a couple of metres and so must have had interlocking branches and one would have brought down its neighbour, very sad to see as they could be 200 years old. Thankfully though the recent strong winds seem to have felled very few trees locally, there is another down across the river along Drefach lane, this ones roots are though remain intact and it should stay alive.

Last week: Daffs well out along the coast and in Aberystwyth, few or reluctant still hereabouts inland. Quite a few Primroses out now. Snowdrops starting going over in places. Hazel catkins long and many.

Sat 26th Bee on Crocuses Lampeter Uni

Sun 27th a fine weekend grass quite dry so first lawn cut/skim (front lawn only really needed it as was left wet and lush from the Autumn). Unusual to have to cut in February (only the second or third occasion, Feb 2019 being the last time - when it reached 20c in Ceredigion).
