Rather mild often dry start to 2020, soon turned unsettled but very mild:

Mon 13th Storm Brendan (Irish named) gave gust to 80mph over exposed WW, here at Lwn gust of 64mph was one of the highest recorded at this location

Tue 14th more strong winds and heavy rain as Brendan's secondary low crossed UK..

Fine dry anticyclonic spell at last after mid month:

Sun 19th frosty night as low as -6c parts of Wales, Lwn and St Harmon -6.3c, Tirabad -4.8c, Trawsgoed -4.3c; Pershore -4.0c, Coventry -1.0c, Mumbles 2.8c.
Highest pressure for almost 100 years across England & Wales today, it topped 1050mbar over S Wales and SW England, the highest levels since 1932 (1051mbar) Here at Lwn 1050mbar smashed the site record (previous 1045mbar Jan 2019)

Mon 20th another sharp frost in places, min Lwn -6.0c, Swyddffynnon & Shobdon  -4.0c, Pembrey -3.7c, Trawsgoed -3.5c, CL -1.9c, Coventry -1.2c, Mumbles +1.9c. Pressure still in high1040's much of the day. Unbroken over 7 hours sunshine much of Midlands (Shobdon 7.6 hrs = sunniest in UK)

Changeable though quite benign towards end to month with varied temperatures but never proper cold:

Nature notes


NYD Wed Jan 1st Mistle Thrush heard singing weakly AG, Coventry

Sat 4th Longwood quite a bit of bird activity esp Blackbird, Jay, Tits, Wren in song; various few flowers out inc odd Dandelion; Bat above and just ahead of car followed for 50m or so along lane towrds Llangybi dusk!

Early to mid month: plentiful fresh vegetation growth, various flowers out inc Daisy; Celandine leaves out, Honeysuckle leaves, Willow catkins...
Some of the remaining Autumn Spiders still surviving on the outside of the windows and spinning fresh webs!
First Daff spikes usual spot in village; first Bluebell spikes emerged under Apple Tree
Large over 2 inch long caterpillar crossing track Llwyndrissi foresty

12th first Snowdrops Drefach lane in the village

GSW heard drum briefly mid month

Sat 18th some small Daffs almost out on way to Crybin (likely an early variety though); quite a few Snowdrops now out. Abundance of fresh growth now inc Forget-me-Not leaves. As with all this Winter, plant and shrub life continues to thrive in Aberystwyth with further blooms in the University grounds..Kingfisher flitting about Castle Rocks at dusk oblivious to those viewing the Starling murmeration (5000 plus should think).

Late month: fair bit of Thrush song (Song & Mistle); Bat seen over garden one dusk
Plentiful Snowdrops month end and many Daff spikes, and a few in bloom
Quite a few of Spiders even on outside of house late month! Fair number of insects too and woodlice, even some slugs!
Grass growth quite substantial especially second half of the month.
