May 2017

Warm and fairly dry; sunshine close to average

Second warmest May in my record srb 2006, mean temperature of 13.0c (2008 13.6c) with mean maxima accounting for much of this warmth. It was quite an average May until the short hot spell toward month end and even after this minima remained high at above 10c. There was a lack of any especially cool weather by day, all maxima exceeding 14c, but as is typical for late Spring we did get a couple of slight air frost (lowest min -1.3c 9th)
Rainfall at 86% driest May since 2012 (52.7mm)
Sunshine close to average with an estimated 187 hours

1st - 11th a little rain and showers 1st then a dry, sunny and rather warm spell. Sunshine almost unbroken 8th and 9th, highest reading 20.1c 2nd. However clear skies permitted some frosty nights, particularly 8th - 11th which were all sub 1c (lowest reading of the month -1.3c 9th). Thundery showers evening of 11th ended the mainly dry spell since the start of April (total rain April 1st to May 10th 22.8mm)

12th - 20th unsettled and rather cloudy with temperatures around average. In contrast this spell gave rain on all but one day, showers with longer spells of rain. Wettest day of the month 17.1mm 15th. Although maxima were all between 14.8c and 17.0c, minima were varied, ranging from a warm 13.0c 16th to 0.8c and grass frost

21st - 24th mostly dry and warm with sunny intervals

25th - 27th heatwave, unusually hot and sunny for May. 28c reached both 25th and 26th, max 28.2c on the latter the highest I have recorded in May (28.1c 25/5/12). Virtually unbroken sunshine these two days with an estimated 15.5 hours on the latter. The following night then produced the highest May minimum of 14.9c (14.0c 04/05/08). Thunderstorms with frequent lightning and heavy rain then arrived before dawn 27th, then a brief warm sunny interlude followed by a rather cool cloudy afternoon

28th - 31st rather warm but rather cloudy and mostly dry. With all the cloud minima stayed well up, no nights in the final 6 of the month fell below 10c. Maxima between 18c and 21c. Dry bar the odd spot of rain or drizzle.
