2016 detailed weather summaries Llanwnnen

January 2016

Mild and wet; virtually snow-less

Although containing a cold spell this was still a mild month overall and with no lying snow or even proper falling snow, although with at least a few sharp frosts. The final 10 days were often very mild with the January highest maximum getting beat twice. It was the mildest January since 2012 (5.8c). This was the third successive month over 200mm rain but only the wettest January since 2014 (236.3mm). November to January has become my wettest 3 month period with 796.8mm. Estimated sunshine at 37 hours was rather below average.

1st – 9th: mostly mild and unsettled, windy at times, spells of rain or showers, heavy at times. A cloudy wet spell having 105mm rain. Temperatures fluctuated but often above average, there was a slight frost evening of 7th. As with December sunshine very limited.

10th – 18th: rather cold and unsettled, occasional showers, some heavy with hail, sleet and wet snow. Some sunny intervals but generally a lot of cloud still, clear intervals permitted a couple of slight frosts. Hail accumulated to about 1cm on the night of 13th/ 14th.

19th/ 20th: rather cold and mostly dry with sunny spells. A run of 56 consecutive rain days stretching back to November 23rd ended 18th. Coldest temperature of the Winter to date min -6.9c 20th.

21st – 31st: often very mild and cloudy; unsettled with rain at times, some quite heavy and it was often windy. My January high temperature record fell, maximum 12.8c on the 24th beating 12.7c from January 2015, as for minima, some exceptionally mild nights above 10c, but did not break my record (11.3c, 20/1/08 still highest SRB 2006). Brief colder interludes, with a slight air frost 28th, while the maximum was below average 30th. The final day saw a new record high maximum of 13.0c so beating the previous Sunday!

February 2016 Llanwnnen, Ceredigion

Near average temperatures, rather wet, virtually snowless

A rather more typical Winter month as tempreatures were little higher than average overall, a 10 minute snow shower early on the 25th providing the Season's only snow lying day (the dusting all gone by 1100). Estimated sunshine about average at 65 hours..

A mild unsettled windy start to the month, it rained on each day to12th with several rather wet days (19.0mm 9th). The months highest maximum was 11.6c on the 1st but it turned cooler from the 9th with some night frost. Rather dull through to mid month. Mostly dry 12th - 16th with sunny spells developing. Temperatures a little below average with a sharp frost 16th. Another mild and unsettled spell with rain at times 17th - 22nd again with plenty of cloud. Minimum 10.0c 21st highest of the month. A mostly dry final week, temperatures close to or a little below average, -6.7c the month's lowest temperature on the 24th with each of the final 7 nights having an air frost. Light rain and feeling quite raw 29th. A quirk of the Leap Year combined with the throwback system then being that heavy rain overnight and on the morning of March 1st made 29th February's wettest day with 21.6mm!

Winter 2015/16

Very mild (due to an exceptionally mild December) and very wet; virtually snow-less

A remarkably mild and wet December made this one of the mildest and wettest Winters on record highly dominated by SW winds. Comfortably the wettest 3 month period I have recorded here, with almost double the average rainfall for the season while the mean temperature was 0.4c above Winter 2006/7 which saw consistently mild weather though no month was extreme. A dusting of snow on Feb 25th prevented it from being a snow-less Winter. No really severe frosts at all, nothing lower than -6.9c. Although windy at times no gust exceeded 57mph.

March 2016

Rather wet in spite of a lengthy dry spell mid month; rather cool but rather sunny

This was the wettest March since 2008 (167.9mm) even though it included a 13 day dry spell. Temperature mean slightly below average due to cool nights, there were 12 air frosts. Nothing spectacular weather or temperature- wise.

1st – 9th unsettled with rather fluctuating temperatures; occasional rain or showers, some wintry. Varied from a very mild 12.6c 1st, to rather cold several days (lowest max 4.8c 4th), there were some frosts by night. Windy at times, sunshine limited excepting 5th which had decent sunny periods.

10th -20th dry, usually mild by day and sunny; the location of high pressure to our north enabled WW to be favoured from the north to NE breeze. Many days saw plentiful sunshine, a few unbroken, although many nights were frosty. Max 15.8c 15th was above any official Welsh station, while the min of -5.4c 18th was lower.

21st - 23rd cloudier but dry with average temperatures

24th – 29th unsettled, spells of rain or showers, some heavy, both 26th and 27th over 20mm (24.3mm latter). Windy at times, some sunny intervals, near normal temps

30th/ 31st dry with sunny periods, night frost, near average maxima

April 2016

Rather cool and changeable with April showers, some wintry; rainfall slightly below average

Coolest April since 2013 (6.6c)
Rainfall total 68.6mm slightly below average.
Estimated sunshine at 133 hours rather below average.
Highest incidence of sleet or snow falling here (on 5 days) SRB 2006, although it did not settle unlike in April 2008 (2cm 7th).

1st – 11th unsettled, occasional rain or showers, mostly in quite small amounts, rather cloudy but some sunny spells, especially 5th which was dry and fairly sunny. Temperatures around average, but rather cold 9th (max 8.1c) when there were some wintry showers with a little snow.

12th – 17th mostly dry, a little rain at times or brief showers, some sunny spells, mild to 14th then cool.

18th - 21st dry with sunny spells and became rather warm. 20th saw an estimated 13 hours of unbroken sunshine and the month's high at 18.2c and 31% was the lowest RH in the 4 year operation of the Davis Vantage Vue. Several nights had slight frost.

22nd - 30th sunny spells and occasional showers, became very cool. Quite a notable cool spell for the end of April with wintry showers on several days along with plentiful hail. Max 8.2c 27th was some 6c below average, quite a sharp frost followed, min -3.2c, not as hard as the -5.0c on April 27th last year. Several days escaped largely dry and bright. Predominantly north to NW winds were often fresh. Temperatures recovered somewhat on the final day (max 11.8c).

9th - 11th mostly cloudy and breakdown via a thunderstorm on the evening of 9th. Further occasional rain followed and it was a mostly cloudy though rather warm humid interlude with min 13.7c 10th being the months highest min

12th -16th dry with sunny periods, warm at first but with air frost min -1.5c 15th

17th - 23rd unsettled and breezy with rain at times, cool to average temperatures, sunny intervals

24th - 26th mostly dry with sunny spells and ground frosts overnight, variable maxima

27th –31st warm with sunny spells and some thunderstorms became dry and sunny. Thunderstorms passed directly overhead on both 27th and 28th with much thunder and lightning, nearby Lampeter town experienced flooding but rainfall was not excessive here. Near unbroken sunshine for final 3 days.

July 2016

Rather dry but rather frequent rain days; very dull with average temperatures

First half decidedly cool and dull, mean maxima 1st to 16th 18.0c, with only one day above 20c
Possible ground frost 4th, min 2.2c (did n't put sensor on lawn).
19th hottest day for exactly a decade (33.6c 19th July 2006).
17.5c min 20th hottest in 10 year record at site.
Rainfall rather frequent but in only small amounts with 21 rain days, wettest day just 7.8mm.
Very dull, just over half the average of c. 180 hours suggested by Met Office sunshine average maps. Last third especially disappointing, each no day 21st – 29th failed to better 3 hours. Only 2 sunny days all month having over 10 hours.

1st - 6th cool and mostly dry with sunny intervals, just a few showers. Min 2.2c 4th there may well have been a grass frost, though colder in July last year +0.7c 31st. Temps managed average 6th max 19.8c.

7th - 11th unsettled with rain at times, mostly cloudy, temps cool to average. 21.4c 8th first day above 20c since June 22nd (21.3c). Minima were though much milder averaging 14.1c over these 5 nights.

12th - 16th very cool but fairly dry, just a little light rain or showers occasionally. Each day had measurable rain but none exceeded 1.0mm. Very cool max 15.7c 12th, no day during this spell managed above 18.0c. Rather cloudy although there were decent sunny spells 14th which had an estimated 9.5 hours making it the sunniest day since June 3rd (14.5 hours).

17th - 20th much warmer with a brief hot spell. All days warm at above 23c – the highest readings since June 9th (25.2c) with the focus of the heat 18th - 19th both of which saw sunny periods. Max 32.6c was the second highest I have recorded at this location in over 10 years and the hottest reading for exactly 10 years! This was followed by the warmest night I have recorded here, min 17.5c bettering17.2c on 18th August 2012. There was some thunder and lightning also this night but no measurable rain making these 4 days the longest dry spell of the month.

21st - 23rd still rather warm and mostly dry but rather cloudy, just a few sunny intervals.

24th – 29th changeable, a lot of cloud, just fleeting sunny intervals and some rain or showers at times, cool to average temperatures, though some rather warm nights at first.

30th – 31st improvement dry with sunny spells and average temperatures

August 2016

Rather dull and changeable but rather warm and rather dry

Maxima and minima both slightly above average - this was the second warmest August on record here after 16.2c in 2012.
Rather dry with no thunder or hail.
Third dull month of Summer although realising its potential more than June and July having a greater proportion of the available daylight with sunshine so it did feel a more pleasant month along with the overall warmth and dryness.

1st - 3rd very cool wet 1st max 14.9c the lowest of the month. The following two days then mostly cloudy with just a little rain and nearer average temperatures

4th - 14th mostly dry but rather cloudy, some sunny spells. Temperatures close to average although cool max 16.4c on the 9th

15th - 18th warm or very warm and mostly dry; only 2.2mm rain 4th – 16th. 15th and 16th saw almost unbroken sunshine, unusual for this dull Summer 2016!

19th - 22nd unsettled and mostly cloudy with occasional rain or drizzle. 17.1mm on the 19th was the wettest day of the month. Temperatures near normal by day but with mild nights, min 16.1c 22nd was the warmest of the month

23rd - 31st often dry and rather warm with sunny spells although rather cloudy a few days. Temperatures reached 26.3c 23rd and fell to 3.7c 27th but not quite a grass frost. A little rain at times as well.

Summer 2016

Mixed: dull but rather dry and rather warm

Surprisingly Summer 2016 was marginally on the warm side of average, both June and August being above average. However there only one brief hot spell (max above 27c) during the entire Summer that of July 18th and 19th. Indeed July was disappointingly dull and cool overall the stats being skewed by the extreme heat of the 19th and 20th (max 32.6c and min 17.5c respectively). July 19th was the hottest for exactly 10 years while the following night was warmest in the record here. July unusually also seeing the coolest night of Summer, min 2.2c 4th a night on which there may well have been a grass frost but a sensor was not placed on the lawn!

Rainfall was below average, July and August being rather dry, June slightly above average. The wettest day of Summer only received 18.3mm (June 19th) although the Summer did manage rain days. There were 3 days with thunder during Summer 2016 only August failing to produce a clap.

Sunshine was very disappointing, July in particular was very dull with barely 100 hours, while June was the sunniest month of Summer with just 127 hours a mere 78% of average. One of the dullest Summers for many a year no doubt, although I do not have records to prove this. There were prolonged rather cloudy spells throughout the Summer with only 8 days of the entire Summer managing above the 10 hours which would make for a sunny day!

November 2016

Very dry and cold; very sunny final week

Coldest since 2010 (4.3c). Cold nights, high frost incidence (12 air frosts) mean minima over 2c below average, mean maxima somewhat closer to average but still below average
Just 69.9mm made this the driest November in my record locally (SRB 2002) and certainly hereabouts since the 1980's and perhaps much further back (driest being 24mm in 1942). The final 9 days were dry.
Sunshine well above average, 93 hours as estimated from the webcam captures which is about 178% of the average as ascertained from Met Office maps. The final 7 days accounted for 45% of the monthly total, with 4 days having an unbroken 7.5 hours..

Autumn 2016

Dry and quite sunny with near normal temperatures

With just 251.4mm this was the driest Autumn at Llanwnnen since 2007 (220mm - it is not uncommon for an individual month to exceed 250mm at this location. September with 130.5mm was by far the wettest month, both October and November having less than half the average. No day over an inch all Season,
With a mean temperature of 9.9c this was the coolest Autumn since 2012 (8.8c). Some notable warmth in September (max 26.9c, min 16.7c mid month) and the last day of October (max 19.4c). October and November both had a high frost incidence, with 12 air frosts during the latter, a low of -5.1c as early as the 6th then severe frosts on the final two nights (min -11.0c 30th). Overall there was a marked progression from Summer conditions mid September to Winter by the end of November as illustrated by the 9c drop in mean temperature through the 3 months. Lowest reading of RH was 51% and unusually occurred on the 29th November and so at the end of this rapidly cooling Season.
October and November were both sunny with a dull September; November remarkably equalled Septembers sunshine of 93 hours.
No thunder, sleet or snow at all this Autumn and just the one morning with fog at 0900.

2016 annual summary, Llanwnnen: dry and rather mild but quite dull

Driest year since 2010 (1116.9mm), unusually no day exceeded an inch (25mm). The year ended on an unusually dry note as the final 2 months having less than half the average along with the longest dry spell of a fortnight.
Rather an uneventful year bar the brief July heatwave (32.5c hottest for a decade) and the severe frost of November 30th (-11.0c). Lack of snow as is now the norm it would seem, snow managed to lay on just the one morning of 2016. 6 days of thunder heard being about average. It was a rather dull year overall with June to September especially dull, each month being below 80% of average as estimated. Unusually high pressure occurred just after Christmas reaching 1044mbar the highest for a number of years.
