Fri 1st warm night, Lwn min 15.2c the highest min recorded so early in the year..(Pershore 16.6c, Valley 15.4c, Aberporth 12.3c)

Sun 3rd virtually unbroken sunshine much of WW (Lwn est 15 hrs, Aberporth 14.9 hrs

Mon 4th warm night parts of S Wales and Midlands (Mumbles min 17.1c, Bablake 14.7c, Capel Curig {CC) 6.8c, Lwn 7.3c). Isolated showers and thunderstorms pm, rumbles heard Lwn 1400 from storm over Brechfa forest 8 miles south this then affected Carmarthen area..Also a tornado over Neyland area of Pembrokeshire early afternoon:


Warm sunny spells WW, rather cloudy much cooler central & E Midlands. Porthmadog max 26.6c warmest in UK (Lwn 25.2c, MH 24.3c, Aberporth 19.2c, Newport, Salop 21.7c, Hereford & Shawbury 20.9c, Nottingham 16.0c)

Tue 5th again disappointingly cool and cloudy much of the Midlands, while WW eventually saw bright rather warm conditions (Porthmadog 22.4c, Lwn 21.8c, Shawbury 19.0c, Coventry 16.8c, Mona 16.1c)

Wed 6th sunny for many and warm although parts of E Mids cloudy and cool once more (Porthmadog 24.3c warmest in UK, Newport, Salop 22.4c, Hereford 21.7c, Lwn 21.6c, Trawsgoed 21.1c, Pembrey 17.1c)

Thu 7th very warm, fair amount of sunshine WW, quite hot Porthmadog max 27.5c yet again UK hot spot; more average Midlands (Lwn 25.9c, Trawsgoed 24.0c, Shawbury 21.2c, Coventry 18.6c, Mumbles 17.7c)

Sat 8th another day of marked regional variation, warm WW to rather cool parts of Midlands (Porthmadog 23.6c, Lwn 23.3c, Newport, Salop 21.0c, Aberporth 18.1c, Coventry 17.2c). Localised downpours pm, chiefly Wales (MH 15.8mm)

Sun 9th many places warm sunny periods, Porthmadog max 25.5c warmest in UK (Lwn 24.7c, Trawsgoed 23.1c, Coton-in-the-Elms {CITE} 23.1c, Newport, Salp 22.9c, Coleshill 22.8c, Aberporth 20.1c)

Cool down mid month, especially WW as westerlies attempted a return and it was dull with a little drizzle. It has however been generally a dry, warm and sunny first half of June

Fri 22nd local frost Wales, min -0.2c reported by UKWW observer Brecon Beacons (Swyddfynnon & Tirabad min +0.2c, Trawsgoed 1.2c, Llanwnnen 5.6c, Mona 10.2c). Sunny day generally, average to warm (Coton-in-the-Elms {CITE} 22.8c, Pershore 22.5c, Mumbles 22.0c, although Aberdaron max 13.9c)

Sat 23rd generally quite warm (Hereford max 24.1c)

Hot, continuing dry end to June:

Mon 25th very warm/ hot (CITE 29.6c, Pershore 29.0c, Coleshill 28.2c, Shawbury 26.8c, Lwn 28.4c, Tirabad 27.7c, Aberporth 22.1c) virtually unbroken sun as yesterday (widely 13 to 15 hours)

Tue 26th fairly cool night again inland but warm some coasts (Mumbles min 17.3c, Lwn 6.8c, Shobdon 8.4c). Hot to very hot by day, highest readings for Wales. Llanwnnen max 31.4c a new June record (30.6c June 2017), also greatest diurnal range of 24.6c and lowest RH of 26%. Porthmadog 30.6c, Trawsgoed 29.7c, Aberporth 27.3c, CITE 30c, Newport, Salop 29c, Shawbury 28.7c, Coventry 26.9c, Aberdaron, Milford Haven & Mumbles 26.1c.

Wed 27th again overnight was refreshingly cool inland but warm for coasts (Mumbles 17.6c, Aberdaron 17.5c, Lwn 7.1c, Pershore 12.3c, Shobdon 8.0c). Hot or very hot again WW, Midlands very warm to hot after a cloudy start in places here: Porthmadog hottest in UK max 31.9c (Llanwnnen 30.8c, Trawsgoed 29.9c, CITE 27.4c, Pershore 27.2c, Nottingham 24.7c, Aberporth 23.8c). Very low humidity also a blessing so the heat not so oppressive, Llanwnnen again having a record low RH today of 25%.

Thu 28th Third day of the Welsh heatwave (much of the Midlands not hot enough to qualify as yet as it takes 5 days or more of at least 5c above average, so e.g. Coventry  5 days above 26c required and yesterday managed only 25.0c! Third successive day above 30c at Lwn which is most unusual here, max 31.0c..again record low RH of  just 17%. Porthmadog once more the UK hot spot at 33.0c (Gogerddan 29c, Trawsgoed 28.4c, CITE 28.1c, Newport, Salop 27.9c, Shawbury 27.3c, Pembrey 23.3c)

Fri 29th widely hot and sunny, Porthmadog 32.5c as usual hottest in the UK (Lwn 30.2c, Trawsgoed 28.4c, Aberporth 23.4c, Newprt, Salop 27.8c )

Sat 30th very warm to hot and virtually unbroken sunshine yet again! Lwn failed to reach 30c today ending that incredible run with max 29.2c (Porthmadog 29.1c, Trawsgoed 28.4c, CITE 27.7c)


Nature notes:

First few days June: plenty of Foxgloves in bloom

Mon 4th 18 -20 Swift Llanwnnen evening

Tue 5th Swift crisis Aberduar chapel Llanybydder, scaffolding and new soffit work obstructing colony from nests. Just a fortnight ago Swifts around the chapel and no scaffolding so this has been sudden!

Wed 6th reprieve of the Aberduar Swifts..

Thu 7th evening, Swifts driving back from Carmarthen: Gwyddgrug 6 (likely gap N side of chapel); 10 New Inn, 6 Llanllwnni Brook Bond Barn

Sun 25th driving home from Coventry, Swifts Llandovery (colony located Stone St, about 6 stains down wall) Also suspected nest in end of soffit in a hole above plaque at a Lampeter takeway where we were customers Swifts around at 9.45 one heard from within building)

Thu 28th first Swift chicks heard Lwn Ch hall

Month end lawns and countryside turning rapidy brown with heatwave and very dry  past two months


June summary: warm/ very warm, dry/very dry and sunny/ very sunny

Some places had no measurable rain at all.
It has been one of the warmest Junes on record.
