Weather summaries 2010 to Feb 2020

Decided to post these on here as a back up and perhaps of interest to someone out there. They are my detailed monthly and annual weather stats and summaries for here in Ceredigion, Wales since 2010. I measure the weather using a Davis Vantage Vue, manual Snowdon rain gauge and observations.

These summaries unfortunately take up a lot of space on here but by scrolling to the bottom of the latest entry all other individual entry links can be found in date order. I have also tagged these under Detailed weather summaries and the usual logs under their respective years eg 2019 logs so that for ease just these will be more easily accessed.

January 2010 Summary and Statistics for Lampeter, Ceredigion

Very cold: Exceptionally cold and snowy first half

The coldest month since February 1986 probably, with some of the lowest temperatures possible for this area experienced. I have not come across anything lower locally than the -16.7c recorded on the 8th, and the lowest maxima of -5.1c on the 7th would be close to a record for these parts too.

1st- 3rd: A cold start to the month with a covering of snow late on the 1st, this covering then lasted until the 15th. Slight overnight frosts.

4th-10th:  Exceptionally cold, continuous snow cover and very severe frosts. Nothing above +2c during this bitter week! 4 ice days and 4 minima below -10c.  Further snowfalls occurred on the 5th and 6th,  with 13cm lying by this stage. Most of the 6th- 9th was clear or sunny with very severe frosts and little thawing at all.

11th- 14th: Less cold and cloudy with a slow thaw setting in. However snowfalls again  on the 12-13th, and a total accumulation of 16cm by the latter, which was only just short of the depth in February 2007 (17cm).

15th- 24th: A rapid thaw occurred on the 15th with virtually no lying snow left by evening. This was the start of a spell of average to mild temperatures, though it never quite reached 10c. It was, however, cold on the 20th.  37mm rain fell on the 15th (most of this early on the 16th). Further rain at times to the 24th, with sunny intervals too.

25th- 27th: A big rise in pressure to 1043mbar- the highest level since December 2006 (1044mbar). Quite cold and rather cloudy, but mainly dry, before a little rain and milder conditions later on the 27th.

28th-29th: Milder and unsettled with spells of rain, but yet another change to colder air during the 29th.

28th- 31st: Rain and wind 28th, it then turned cold with wintry showers and frosts providing a suitable end to this very wintry month. There was a snow cover once more for the final 2 days, with 5cm lying on the 31st.

Snow drift remnants, especially on hill-sides, remained to the end of the month, meaning that snow was always within sight from New Year’s Day

February 2010, Lampeter, Ceredigion, weather statistics and summary

Cold, dry and frosty

Rounded off this very cold winter with it’s third well below average month.
Nights were frequently cold and frosty during February (17 air frosts), although maxima were only a little below average.
A dry month- but less so than February 2009 (28mm).

1st -6th: An unsettled start to the month with rain at times. Temperatures generally above average, almost reaching 10c on the 5th a level not attained since December 10th. The 6th was dry with sunny periods.

7th - 13th: Dry and rather cold to cold with some severe frosts, as low as -8.2c on the 11th. Limited sunshine by day, although the 11th saw unbroken brilliant sunshine.

14th-16th: Unsettled again, with rain/ showers at times and also sunny intervals. Near average temperatures, but still with some frosty nights.

17th-23rd: Cold with night frosts and wintry showers. Snow covered the ground on each morning from the 19th- 21st , this remaining in well shaded areas throughout the day times too.

24th- 28th: The 24th was an odd day in that it was very mild and sunny! It was the mildest since late November- this the day after the month’s coldest maximum of 3.1c on the 23rd. The remainder of February saw temperatures around average with sunny intervals and some showers, and only ground frosts by night now.

As with January, snow on the ground was visible from here throughout the month, what with the by now very small drift remnants on nearby hills at above 350 metres.

Winter 2009/10 mean temperature: 2.1c

March 2010, Statistics and summary for Lampeter, Ceredigion

Cold, dry and very frosty first half; mild and unsettled second half, cold wintry end though.

1-16th: Winter kept up its frosty grip, with 12 of the first 16 nights seeing air frost, these severe at times, the lowest being -7.1c on the 5th. It was a largely dry and sunny spell too, winds between east and north, and maxima around average, although some days were rather cold. Snow patches remaining from January still visible on nearby hills.

17th- 29th: A complete switch to mild/ very mild conditions and with rain at times. Winds now from the south or south-west, dry sunny spells at a premium, and with only a few slight frosts. The lows were slow- moving and often to the west of the UK, with winds not so strong at least.

30th- 31st: Turned much colder 30th, with rain and sleet. Very cold and windy last day of March, maximum of just 4.5c was the lowest of the month.

Mean minima 1-16th: -3.3c

Mean minima 17th- 31st: 5.1c which shows how temperatures completely switched mid month!

A very delayed Spring this in terms of nature- Daffs only just out by the months end, very few hedgerows started to break into leaf yet, let alone any trees. Grass only slowly growing now, it was brown/ yellow until mid month.

All but 2mm of the month’s rain fell from the 18th, and brought the total to average.

May 2010 summary and statistics for Lampeter, Ceredigion

Summary

Dry and quite sunny, average temperatures.

A nice dry month with plenty of sunshine. The driest May locally since 2005, it would have been very dry were it not for 12mm rain falling early on June 1st. Much of the first half was on the cool side, while the second half was average to warm.

1st - 17th: An often cool northerly flow with sunny spells. Rather unsettled at times, although just trifling amounts of rainfall. The first thunder of 2010 occurred on the 1st which also happened to be a rare warmish day (16c) for the first half of the month. Occasional frosts at night, the lowest was -1.8c on the 4th.

18th - 19th : Warmer at last still a little rain around.

20th - 25th : Warm to very warm and very sunny. A sudden appearance of Summer with the magic 80f reached (22nd)! Coolish nights still though.

26th - 31st : Temperatures returned to around the average or even rather cool. Mostly dry with sunny spells although fairly wet on the 29th. Wet after midnight of the 31st but of course it has to count towards May’s rain and not June’s!

June 2010 statistics and summary, Lampeter, Ceredigion

Summary

Dry and quite sunny, warm by day

With half the average rainfall, this was the driest June since 2006 (26mm). There has only been the one wet June (186mm in 2007), since we moved to area in late 2002. The warmth was exclusively due to the lack of low maxima through the month with average maxima close to 70f. Fog was observed more than usual, being present on 5 days, but had cleared before 0900 each morning.

1st-5th: Heavy rain before 10am on the first was counted to May’s total. Apart from this a dry start to June, and although a cool opening day, it was then warm and mostly sunny.

6th-9th: Unsettled with near normal temperatures and rain or showers at times. Very heavy showers and a thunderstorm on the 9th which gave almost half of the month’s rain (19.5mm).

10th-20th: Dry (apart from 2mm on the 13th), Temperatures between near normal and warm by day but often nights were cool, with a late slight ground frost on the 20th. Some days saw just sunny intervals, but quite a few were sunny, especially the 15th- 17th.

21st-27th: The dry spell continued and it became warm or very warm by day. It was mostly sunny, but with clear, and often cool, refreshing nights. Temperatures peaked at 24.6c on the 26th.

28th-30th: Warm and rather humid, cloudier, but with some sunny spells. The first rain for 15 days fell on the 28th but was just 4.6mm.

July 2010 Summary and statistics, Llanwnnen, Lampeter

Summary

Dull and wet, average temperatures.

A poor Summer month after the expectations raised by such a good May and June here. Not as wet as last July (213mm), but few really sunny days and a total lack of any heat (highest reading of 22.4c on the 10th). Saying that there was not much in the way of really cool conditions either, the lowest maximum being 17.2c on the 18th.
Rain fell frequently and was very heavy at times. 6 days had over 10mm, the wettest being 41mm on the 20th (the wettest of the year so far).

1st-12th: The 1st saw some heavy rain, but although the early part of the month was rather unsettled, rainfall amounts were on the small side generally. Temperatures average to rather warm.

13th-20th: Very wet- over half the months rain in these 8 days alone. Torrential downpours at times, especially on the 20th. Mostly cloudy with just some sunny intervals. Temperatures rather cool to average in the main.

21st-24th: Still quite unsettled, but as with the start of the month, lesser amounts of rain. Sunny spells more prevalent, with temperatures rather cool to average still.

25th-31st: A little rain at times and rather cloudy. Average to quite warm temperatures.

August 2010 Statistics and Summary, Llanwnnen, Ceredigion

Summary

Rather cool, cloudy and unsettled

Not especially wet this month compared with July, but otherwise equally un- Summer-like with warm weather at a premium and often with a lot of cloud. Nothing in the way of prolonged warm or sunny weather making it seem more like early Autumn much of the time. In spite of temperatures never much exceeding 22c, the overall temperature was not too far below average.

1st- 13th: Slightly unsettled with small amounts of rain at times. Rather cloudy with some sunny spells and temperatures cool to average.

14th-26th: Unsettled with rain and showers, very heavy at times. Continuing generally rather cloudy with only limited sunny spells. Again rather cool to around average temperatures, although rather warm 15th/16th and 21st /22nd, but very cool 25th/26th, the maximum did not reach 15c on the latter.

27th- 29th Rather cool and breezy but with sunny spells, and just a few showers.

30th-31st: High pressure made a belated Summer appearance over the UK and it was mostly sunny but with unseasonably cold nights- the lowest I have ever known in August! Down to just 1.3c on 31st, colder than the 3.4c in August 2007, and ground frosts on both these nights.

December 2010

Exceptionally cold and snowy, mild last few days. Very dry.

An historical month. One of the coldest months since 1963, and the coldest December. 6 ice days, 23 air frosts, and snow lying on 20 days. The most startling figure being that 9 nights fell below -10c.

1st – 9th: Cold/ very cold with the snow cover from the end of November continuing. Snow flurries 1st/ 2nd became rain and sleet showers on the 3rd/ 4th. Some very severe frosts, down to as low as -12.7c on the 3rd . Sunny intervals, but sunny days 6th and 8th.

10th – 11th: Thaw, average temperatures and rather cloudy,with a little rain.

12th - 15th : Cold and mostly cloudy, mostly dry.

16th: Near normal temperatures, showery, these wintry later.

17th- 26th : Very cold, some very severe frosts. Heavy snow on the 17th gave 19cm, the most seen since we moved to the area in 2002. This snow then lay on the ground until the 27th. Further snow showers on the 18th added slightly to the depth. Thereafter, mostly dry, and sunny 21st -25th, 4 successive ice days 22nd -25th , culminating in a truly exceptional Christmas Day having a minimum of -17.7c and maximum of -6.2c.

27th: Sleet and rain at times with a steady thaw, a cold, raw day though.

28th – 31st: Mild and mostly cloudy, mist and fog at times. A rapid thaw would have cleared most of the snow by the 28th.
