2011 weather summaries Llanwnnen

January 2011, Lampeter, Ceredigion

Summary

Cold and frosty, very little snow, slightly above average rainfall

A disappointment for cold and snow lovers after late November and December's excesses, however this January in many Winter's of old would be perceived as a cold one, with air frosts on 17 nights, these severe at times, as low as -10.6c, which in itself was rather unusual pre 2009. Apart from the frequent frosts a green rather white month though.

Most of the rain fell in the first half, with only 15mm in the last 2 weeks.

1st - 3rd: Mostly dry, rather cold and cloudy.

4th – 11th: Unsettled with spells of rain or showers, heavy at times, also a brief snowfall early on the 7th. Temperatures close to average with some night frosts. Sunny spells at times too.

12th – 16th: Very unsettled, very mild and windy at times. Periods of rain and often dull and murky. Wettest day of the month was 28.5mm on the 12th. Gales occurred on the 15th and 16th.

17th – 23rd: Rather cold / cold and dry. Sunny spells at times, some thick fog by night, and some severe frosts, with the 20th - 22nd all around -8c. Pressure rose to a high of 1042mbar on the 21st.

24th – 26th: Cloudy, near normal temperatures, wet on the 25th.

27th – 31st: Very cold and dry. Mostly sunny with severe night frosts, down to -11c on the last two nights.

February 2011, Llanwnnen, Lampeter

Very mild, rainfall a little above average.

The re-appearance of a very mild Winter month after several years absence. Few frosts and no snow falling at all, only a very little barely noticeable sleet on 2 days mid month. The most remarkable statistic being the lack of below average maxima, with no day failing to reach 7c.
Although it rained on 24 days out of 28, much of this was light, and the total was only a little above the average

1st - 7th: Mild, cloudy, unsettled and windy with gales at times. A couple of slight frosts.

8th : Quite a sharp frost, sunny morning, then cloudy and mild.

9th – 12h: Very mild and unsettled, light rain and drizzle at times with some sunny spells.

13th -16th: Near normal temperatures, spell of rain and the odd spot of sleet. Sunny intervals, touches of frost by night.

17th - 26th: Mild to very mild, rain at times, rather cloudy but some sunny spells. What seemed like a localised foehn effect produced the month's highest reading of 13.6c on the 19th. Heavy rain late on the 25th made this the wettest day with 21.6mm.

27th / 28th: Mostly dry apart from a few showers 27th , cooler with night frost, and a sunny final day.

March 2011

Very dry and sunny, very warm spell late on. Plenty of frost.

A very dry month with only about a quarter of the average March rainfall. Overall rather mild, but this being made up of contrasting very mild maxima with cold nights, and whilst virtually no maxima were below average there were 14 air frosts, quite a high figure for March. No lying snow again, so none since early January now. Mean temperature a touch below that of February which was a very mild month.

1st - 8th: Hard frosts by night, mostly sunny days. Maxima slightly above average, but very cold nights as low as -6.9c 0n the 8th, the lowest in March for quite a time. Minima averaged -4c in this period.

9th -13th : Light rain or drizzle at times, near average temperatures and breezy.

14th – 21st : Mostly dry and mild with sunny spells at times. Hard frost 19th (-5c).

22nd – 28th: Very warm and mostly sunny, with some slight overnight frosts. Unseasonably high maxima for early Spring, peaking at 19c on the 24th, including a run of 5 days topping 60f (15.6c), which is virtually unprecedented.

29th - 31st : Unsettled, breezy with rain at times, mild. Final night the mildest, minimum 8.5c.

April 2011, Lampeter, west Wales

Exceptionally warm and sunny. Very dry

As with the CET zone, west Wales has almost certainly had its warmest April on record, with, incredibly, mean maxima at early June levels! The month was characterized by dry, sunny and warm to very warm conditions and a deficit of cold, wet weather. Seven days exceeded 21c, itself quite an achievement as early as April, while just one day failed to reach the average. Few frosts and just the single air frost. Most of the rainfall total of 29mm fell in the first 5 days, with only 5mm thereafter. I would guess that it was also the sunniest ever April.

1st -5th: Near normal temperatures with rain and showers at times. Quite a spectacular, though brief thunderstorm in the early hours of the 2nd.

6th -10th: Warm to very warm and mostly sunny.

11th -13th : A little rain and times, much cooler, only reaching 9c on the 13th.

14th - 22nd : Dry, soon became warm to very warm again. Sunny periods, although a few cloudier days too. Temperatures peaked at around 24c on both 21st and 22nd (Good Friday), and were just short of the remarkable values of April 2007. Light showers on the evening of the 22nd.

23rd - 30th : Mostly warm and dry with sunny periods, although much cooler than Good Friday. First air frost on 28th, only slight. A very warm but quite windy final day- fittingly for this truly exceptional month.

May 2011

Quite mild, windy and unsettled; average rainfall

May was often changeable and windy, with rain or showers at times, falling on 23 days although generally quite light. Disappointingly average after such warm start though and of course that April.

1st - 7th: Warm and mostly dry but breezy. Sunny spells. Temperatures up to 21c.

8th - 20th: Unsettled and often windy with some rain or showers at times, although these were rarely heavy. Sunny spells at times too with temperatures average to rather warm, but ground frosts occurred on the 13th and 14th .

21st - 27th : Windy and unsettled, rain or showers, heavy at times. Near gale force winds at times. Around average temperatures, although cool on the 26th (max 13c). Still some sunny spells on most days.

28th - 31st: Rather unsettled, some rain or showers and some sunshine. Breezy with near average temperatures.

June 2011, Lampeter, Ceredigion, 120 masl

Unsettled, breezy, near average temperatures and rainfall

Not so Summer- like however neither was June a washout. Nice to start and end, unsettled most of the time.

5th - 12th : Cool and unsettled with rain or showers at times. Sunny spells but often quite windy. Unseasonable run of frosts 10th to 12th, down to -0.2c on the latter.

13th - 25th : Continuing unsettled, but with around average temperatures, and much milder nights. Sunny intervals but some further rain or showers at times, often quite windy still. 24th was the wettest day since February in spite of a fairly modest total of 15mm.

26th - 27th : A brief very warm spell, but this only lasting until midday of the 27th. Sunny periods with a high of 26.6c on the 26th. Much cooler and cloudy later 27th.

July 2011, Llanwnnen, Lampeter

Near average rainfall and temperatures; driest since 2006

Overall a fairly 'typical' July, if such a thing exists! Both overall temperatures and total rainfall being very close to average. In finer detail, the month was often unsettled for the first 22 days, then mostly dry; a high frequency of cool nights (8 getting lower than 8c), and a lack of heat throughout the month with 25c not being reached. A high incidence of fog -7 days- but this perhaps more of a reflection of the fact that I now have a webcam and can view snapshots of pre- dawn and early morning mist and fogs, whereas in previous Summers, my slumbers meant I remained blissfully unaware of them!

1st – 4th: A warm, sunny start to the month but with very chilly nights in the 3-6c range, and close to ground frosts.

5th – 10th: Unsettled with rain or showers, some heavy, also sunny spells. Rather windy with near average temperatures.

11th – 14th: Mostly dry and rather warm, sunny at times. Thundery showers passed close by on the 12th but we escaped with just trace rainfall. A very cool mid July night, minimum 3.8c on the 14th.

15th- 22nd: Very unsettled, often cool and breezy. Generally cloudy with spells of rain and showers, these very heavy at times. 21.6mm on the 21st made it the wettest day since February (this however showing the dryness of 2011 to date and lack of really wet days).

23rd-27th : Dry and became warm. A mix of cloudy and sunny periods with the north-west flow about the high to the west. Plenty of early morning mist and fog, some nights being very cool once more.

28th – 31st: A mostly cloudy, rather warm and humid end to the month. Some bright spells but also a little light rain or drizzle at times.

August 2011

Rather dry, near average temperatures.

A nondescript Summer month, lacking any heat, thunderstorms, really wet weather, or really sunny weather, The only notable aspect being the frequency of very cool August nights,8 falling below 8c)

1st - 3rd : Quite warm with some sunshine, a few showers. The months' disappointing low highest maxima of just 23c was on the 3rd.

4th – 5th: Near average temperatures. Mostly dry, some limited sunshine.

6th - 16th : Unsettled and breezy with rain or showers at times. Temperatures mostly cool to average, although fairly warm 11th. A rather cloudy spell with some sunny spells.

17th - 23rd : Mostly dry with sunny spells and average to rather warm temperatures.

24th - 28th : Unsettled, quite cool and breezy with occasional showers. Possible thunder on the afternoon of the 26th, my wife thought she heard something, and the radar and webcam evidenced downpours passing close by.

29th – 30th : A cool and cloudy, but mostly dry couple of days.

31st: A very chilly night, minimum of 3.4c, close to a ground frost. Warmer with some sunshine by day.

September 2011 Weather at Lampeter, Wales

Generally unsettled: rather warm, thanks to an exceptionally warm end; average rainfall

A rather mundane month until the last few days heatwave, and apart from the ex-Katia gales on the 12th. It was a measure of the coolness of Summer 2011 that September ended up with a similar mean temperature to July and August and indeed with warmer nights!

1st / 2nd: Dry and warm first couple of days, and sunny on the 1st.

3rd – 13th: Very unsettled and windy with showers or longer spells of rain, these heavy at times. The former hurricane Katia gave gale force winds on the 12th. Temperatures close to average by day but very mild by night, a high minimum of 16.7c on the 10th.

14th / 15th: A ridge gave a brief dry interlude with sunny spells, and again average temperatures of around 18c.

16th - 25th Unsettled once more, with rain or showers at times, temperatures close to average, not much sunshine, and windy at times.

26th : Foggy start, then dry with some sunshine.

27th – 30th: An exceptionally warm end to September, and warmer than most of the actual Summer.
The last 3 days were incredibly warm for the very end of this Autumn month, each day exceeding 25c, a level that July and August did not reach once- and with warm nights too (above 14c). Needless to say dry, and mostly sunny, although breezy.

November 2011 at Lampeter in west Wales

Exceptionally mild, below average rainfall

Very little in the way of cold this month, and although unsettled at times, Ceredigion was spared the worst of the rain.

1st – 4th: A deep low close to Ireland made for a very mild unsettled start to the month with rain or showers, heavy at times.

5th- 7th: Cooler, dry with some sunshine and overnight frost and fog. Quite a severe frost on the 7th with a low of -5.5c which put paid to many of the late flowers and out of season budding. A rather cold maximum of just 6.8c on the 7th.

8th- 11th: Unsettled and very mild. Low pressure over the Atlantic brought up more Tropical Maritime air from the south. Rain at times, some heavy. It was often cloudy, although with a sunny interlude on the 10th.

12th and 13th: Exceptionally mild and dry with plenty of sunshine. 17c on the latter was the highest this late in Autumn for several decades.

14th- 30th: Mild to very mild and mixed. Sunny spells and also some rain at times. Ground frost occasionally by night and a slight air frost on the 23rd. The final week of the month was often windy with gale force gusts at times. The 11.6c minimum 29th in stark contrast to the run of sub -10c nights we were in this time last year! Still some budding and flowering.

Unsettled and wet; rather mild

1st – 12th: Very unsettled, often windy with spells of rain and showers, heavy and with hail at times. Some sunny spells too.
