2013 weather summaries Llanwnnen

January 2013

Slightly cold overall; snowy spell 18th – 25th; rainfall near average

Mild early and late with a cold, snowy spell between. No extreme temperatures. Much of the rain fell in the final week.

1st – 8th: Mild and quite dry but cloudy. The start of the year saw benign, quiet mild weather after all the rain and wind of December! Atmospheric pressure reached 1038mbar its highest level since last May. There was some drizzle at times,.

9th - 14th : Rather cold and unsettled, rain or showers at times. Dry, sunny intervals between, and with some clear, frosty nights, down to -4.7c 13th.

15th - 25th: Cold to very cold, mainly cloudy, sleet or snow at times. Not your classic bitter Winter cold spell, temperatures never got below -3c with the persistent cloud cover, however it was quite snowy. Heavy sleet turned to snow on the 18th giving a 9cm covering, while higher up in the nearby Carmarthenshire hills level snow was hard to estimate due to drifting, but was at least 15cm deep. The snow cover then lay for over one week as temperatures remained low throughout, never getting much above +3c, and with just a gradual thaw. There was only a little further snow after 18th at Lampeter, unlike some parts of SW Wales which were hit badly again 23rd. The sun came out at long last on the 24th after 8 successive generally overcast days! The thaw arrived with heavy rain and strong winds the following day.

26th – 31st: Mild to very mild, very unsettled and windy. Periods of rain and showers, heavy at times. Thunderstorms with vivid fork lightning evening of 26th. Temperatures peaked at 11.4c 29th,

February 2013

Rather cold and quite dry

All the rain fell in the first half, with no measurable rain after the 13th. Quite a cold month but with no especially cold weather, nor was there any snow.

1st – 10th: Unsettled with rain and showers at times, some hail, and a thunderstorm on the evening of the 4th. Temperatures variable from rather cold to mild, with some slight frosts. There was a gale in the early hours of the 6th.

11th – 13th: Brief cold snap but without frost and mostly dry, maxima 4c. Heavy rain with mild air arrived late 13th.

14th – 19th: After heavy rain in the early hours of the 14th this was a dry and mild spell. Sunny intervals, with the 17th to 19th being very sunny. Foehn effect from the nearby hills 18th and 19th with low humidity and dew points. 19th was an incredible sunny day starting with a hard frost, low of -6c, followed by a mild afternoon, RH just 39% and dew points down to -2c mid afternoon. In fact the 19th saw both the coldest and mildest readings of the month!

20th – 28th: Dry, cold to rather cold: High pressure first over Scandinavia later moved over the UK, a rather cloudy spell with some sunny spells, although the 21st was a sunny day. Some quite sharp frosts when the cloud cleared, down as low as -5c. Last day saw quite a mild afternoon between frosts. The final 15 days of February were dry, making this the first 'absolute drought' since April 2010 (17 days).

March 2013

Very cold and frosty; above average rainfall

Probably the coldest March locally since 1962, this was also the coldest month of Winter 2012/ 13! This in spite of a reading of 16c on the 5th. High frequency of frost and sleet or snow, although the latter was in generally very small amounts. -10.2c the coldest night of the month, in itself not unusually low for this month. It would have been quite a dry month were it not for over two inches rain falling in 24 hours 21st – 22nd. The first fortnight had just 6mm following on from the very dry second half of February. No measurable rain during the last 9 days.

1st – 5th: Dry with sunny spells but frosty nights. Variable maxima from rather cold to very mild. Big variation on the very clear/ sunny 5th from -5.5c to 16c.

6th – 9th: Mild and mostly cloudy with a little light rain and drizzle at times.

10th – 14th: Mostly dry and cold with sunny spells, and some snow flurries. Hard night frosts, -10.2c on the 14th which then reached 8.4c.

15th – 20th: Rather cold and unsettled with rain or wintry showers and slight night frosts. Very heavy snow showers on the afternoon of the 16th gave a 3cm covering and led to the latest day of snow lying since April 2008.

21st – 31st: Very cold/ cold: Heavy rain and strong winds 21st and 22nd with 53mm in 24 hours. Thereafter mainly dry bar the odd light snow flurry. Sunny spells with chilling east winds, air frost each night from the 24th these severe at times, down to -8.4c 28th.

June 2013

Dry with near average temperatures

With just 2 inches rainfall this was the driest June since 2010 (41mm), only one day having above 10mm (13.6mm 27th). A warm, dry and sunny first 10 days, was followed by a changeable pattern of westerly winds and some rain at times. Nothing terribly spectacular temperature wise either, although it dropped to below 2c on the 25th with a late grass frost.

1st – 10th: Dry, very sunny and warm/ very warm. H pressure over or close to the UK, plentiful clear skies and sunshine for West Wales compared with the East! The first two days were cool but then maxima were between 20 and 25c. Several days had virtually unbroken sunshine. Nights were cool even with grass frosts 2nd to 4th.

11th – 16th: Atlantic lows brought much cooler and changeable conditions, rain or showers at times, and strong winds at times too, especially 14th.

17th – 19th: Rather warm and mainly dry with sunny spells.

20th – 23rd: Unsettled with some rain or showers at times, but no large amounts, became quite cool and windy over the weekend of 22nd / 23rd.

24th – 26th: Dry with sunny spells and near average temperatures, chilly nights.

27th: - 28th: Unsettled with rain at times, a little sunshine

29th – 30th: Dry with some sunshine, not so warm though.

July 2013

Very warm, very sunny and dry

This was a fine and sunny Summer month, the warmest of any month since July 2006, also with the highest temperatures since that hot month when it reached 33.6c. The rather rare occurrence here in West Wales of the mercury exceeding 30c. Large amounts of sunshine and a prolonged dry spell lasting 20 days, a rather wet last few days not redressing the balance, it was the driest July since 2006 (30.4mm)

1st – 3rd: Cool, a little sunshine with a little rain and drizzle at times, warmer 4th.

4th – 6th: Building pressure, warmer, dry with some sunshine after fog and low cloud. Clear and chilly by night

7th – 22nd: Dry, very warm/ hot and very sunny., thanks to high pressure stuck firmly over or close to the UK. An outstanding fortnight plus of heat and sunshine, most days having above 10 hours sun. Maxima consistently above 24c with the exception of 16th (22.6c), and hot at times. Hottest day being 30.1c 19th , while it exceeded 26.6c (80f) on 7 days. Nights for the most part clear and refreshingly cool, regularly dropping below 11c, although it only fell to a sticky 16c on 22nd. Some mornings experienced fog which always cleared by 0900.

23rd – 27th: Mostly dry and warm with sunny intervals. A gentle let down from the heat! With more cloud, nights were often warm at around 16c, while highs were a more pleasant 24c. The first rain for weeks arrived during the evening of 24th only amounted to 3.5mm, and was followed by a further mostly dry couple of days.

28th – 31st: Cooler and unsettled with rain at times. A proper cool down to nearer average levels, some rain and showers each day, a solitary clap of thunder 29th. Half inch of rain 28th made it by far the wettest day of this dry month. Much cloudier but with still with sunny intervals. Final day and it was the first sub 20c maximum since July 6th.

September 2013

Averaged out September was an average kind of month with no extremes at all. Rainfall was a little below average while temperatures were about average. However both the first few days and last 10 saw plenty of dry and warm weather, with all but a fraction of a millimetre of the total rain falling in the fortnight from 6th to 19th. There was just the sole grass frost, only one day had hail, no gales nor thunder and limited fog.

1st – 5th: Dry and quite warm with sunny spells, the month's highest reading of 23.7c was on 4th

6th – 20th: Unsettled and mostly cool with rain at times. Heavy rain overnight 8th gave 29mm, the wettest day of the month. At times it was very cool, notably on the 18th which was the coolest day of the month with a max of just 13.2c, although it failed to reach 15c on 4 other days. A rather poor spell for sunshine with no day exceeding an estimated 6 hours. The first ground frost of Autumn occurred on the night of 15th down to 1c.

21st - 30th: Mostly dry and generally warm, some sunny intervals. High pressure close to the UK with 3 days of 21st to 24th exceeding 22c, very warm for late September, the highest being 23.6c 23rd (Trawsgoed reached 25c). The only cool day was the high of 15.6c 26th an overcast day as a weak cold front temporarily cooled things. The mildest nights of the month occurred during this spell, both 22nd and 23rd having minima of 15.1c. Even without the direct influence of high pressure after 24th it remained mainly dry to the month end

October 2013

Very mild, rather cloudy and very wet

This was the wettest October since 2008 (222mm) and a consistently mild month with nights especially mild, the mean minima was above 10c up to 26th. Maxima although mild were unexceptional, with no date reaching 20c. Although very unsettled and windy at times, this part of the country missed the gales that affected some other areas towards the month end.

1st – 8th: Mild and unsettled with rain or showers at times, limited sun, some dry interludes, breezy. Especially mild by night, the mildest night of the month was the 4th minimum 14.8c, with 5 nights remaining above 13c.

9th – 12th: Cool and mostly dry but rather cloudy although bright 10th. Quite windy at times.

13th – 14th: Cool and showery with sunny intervals

15th – 27th: Mild/ very mild and very unsettled with rain at times, some heavy. Heavy rain 21st with 29mm credited to 20th; 7 of the 8 days 20th - 27th having above 10mm. Strong winds at times but never quite attaining gale force, the highest gust of the month being 39mph 25th. 18th to 26th (9 consecutive nights) all very mild above 10c.

28th – 31st: Further rain at times, cooler, sunny intervals. Season's first air frost 30th Min -0.6c.

November 2013

Slightly cold; unsettled to 20th then mostly dry

Although unsettled for the first 3 weeks there were no very wet periods and so the total for the month given the dry latter stages was a below average 111mm. Nothing exceptional temperature wise, a lack of particularly mild weather but there were some hard frosts.

1st – 14th: Unsettled with rain or showers at times, some heavy. A typical mixed period there were sunny intervals but only short dry spells between the rain systems. Temperatures around average to quite cool and with slight frosts at times. Only two days reached the mild category, the mildest reading of the month being 14.2c on the 11th. Windy at times with gales 2nd and a gust of 51mph. In spite of high pressure of above 1030mbar arriving on the 12th the unsettled conditions were not stemmed until 15th.

15th – 17th: High pressure close by to the SW gave a generally dry few days although it was mainly cloudy. Temperatures average to mild.

18th – 20th: Turned rather cold and showery, plenty of hail showers and strong winds. Some sunny breaks.

December 2013

Mild, very wet and quite dull

In spite of the first 11 days only having 7mm rain the rest of the month was very wet totalling 258.7mm. It was slightly wetter than Dec 2012 (257mm) and the wettest month since Nov 2009 (309mm). Plenty of mild weather and nothing especially cold, the coldest night being a mere -2.2c with fewer than normal frosts. However there was also a lack of notably mild weather as the highest reading was just 12.3c (15th). With the very unsettled and often showery nature hail featured on 9 days. The wettest and windiest weather occurred 14th to 27th when gale force gusts were common and 200mm fell in this fortnight alone

1st – 7th: High pressure dominated plenty of dry weather just some light rain at times. Temperaturs close to average and a mostly cloudy spell.

8th – 12th: Mostly dry and high pressure dominated still, mild with some sunny intervals.

13th -16th: Unsettled but very mild; cloudy and often windy with spells of rain, some heavy

17th –27th: Very unsettled and disturbed with a succession of deep lows crossing the Atlantic towards the UK. Often windy, gales at times with frequent rain or showers, often heavy and with hail. 18th and 23rd both getting over 30mm rain with localised flooding. 5 days in this spells saw wind gusts exceeding 50mph, strongest gust of 60mph on the 23rd. Thankfully the Festive period saw a brief respite. Sunshine continued at a premium although most days saw a few sunny intervals.

28th – 29th: Mainly dry with sunny spells and night frosts and less windy

30th – 31st: More heavy rain, localised flooding and strong winds; some sunshine and quite mild
