Nature notes

Thu 3rd snatch of Blackbird song heard Carmarthen this lunchtime.

Sun 13th snatch of Mistle Thrush song on this notably warm November day! Also a Red Admiral.

Mid month with the very mild first half to November and continued lack of frost, many flowers are still in bloom inc Roses, lots of Ox eye Daisies in Lampeter, etc. Plenty of Gorse out (one of the few plants able to bloom any month of the year!). A few Dandelions giving a late show.

Brambles still extending at a rate comparable with late Summer, grass still growing (cut the lawns Sun 13th and in shorts both the latest ever).

Fri 18th Aberystwyth decent Starling roost of 5000 plus, no large single murmuration though, it was quite windy and mainly smaller groups going straight under the pier. 10 or so Turnstone just under the sea wall near the pier again it was high tide as with last month.

Sun 20th Neuadd lane, Llanwnnen: much fresh foliage evident (nothing below -2c as yet), inc Wild Rose, Honeysuckle these where the hedgerows have had their recent trim; much Celandine leafage covering the south facing bank; some Red Campions out. Blackbird dusk 'cacophony'.

Late month: growth continues albeit slowed down now, Buddleia sprouted fresh shoots since the trim last month. Some Oak trees hanging on in leaf, most other trees now bare.

Fri 25th Aberaeron prolific blooming in the town gardens (the 'second Spring' as reported on BBC), inc Roses, Hydrangea, Fuchsia and various potted plants. Also shrubs where trimmed during the Autumn have regrown and some of these flowering again. Typically by late Autumn frost would have curtailed this.

Sat 26th Bluebell spikes appearing under the Apple tree (note they were well out in the exceptionally mild Dec 2015).

Sun 27th Neuadd lane, Llanwnnen dusk: much flowering still evident, with  Pink Clover, Campion and Daisy all out; fresh Hawthorn and Oak sapling leaves in the hedgerows; with Sycamore and Oak having fresh sprouting too;  hundreds of Starling heading to local roosts

Fri 9th showery again, fewer than of late, thunder in these again (especially Midlands). Thunder heard again at Coventry (one cell passed over the city) and Rugby (more distant rumbles). The past 7 days have all now had thunder at least somewhere in Wales and/ or the Midlands!

Sat 30th a wet and windy last day, over an inch parts of WW locally over 2 inches

Nature notes:

Wed 7th 40 or 50 hirundines (mostly Swallow) above Rhydybont chapel, Llanybydder this evening.

Forestry: large number of small birds in the trees (hard to see) saw a few Coal Tit but most sounded like Goldcrests.

Sat 10th Aberaeron early evening 10 - 15 H Martin.

Mid month north winds seem to have carried most Hirundines south.

Sat 17th think I caught a glimpse of a couple of Swallows from the back window.

Sat 17th snatch of a Chiffchaff call Forestry.

Sat 17th 20 or 25 Collard Dove on wires above a nearby farm this evening, just about the largest gathering of them I have ever seen (to think they were not resident in the UK until the 1950's). A few tens of metres away the Red Kites were feeding (not on Doves).

Late Sept: first reddening Holly berries, many on the turn.

It has been a bumper year for apples, never seen so many (many hundreds on our trees) Often here late frosts in May damage the blossom and so not so many apples.

There have been an abundance of Large White Butterflies all through this month, most times I have gazed at the back garden at least one or 2 flutter over.

Sun 25th walking just outside the village: 7 Swallow, 5 of which on a telegraph wire, several definitely young as being fed by adults which were feeding over adjacent fields. Late in the walk 3/ 4 House Martin above Capel-y-Groes.

Wed 28th a few H Martin & Swallow flew over the edge of the village heading S.

Fri 30th fantastic sight before dusk for 45 minutes after rain and wind cleared of 25 to 30  House Martin feeding above the gardens. Rarely seen so many together.  They suddenly disappeared so wondered if they went down somewhere or continued flying? PS I did see also just after they disappeared around 20 small birds rapidly alighting in one of the trees beyond the houses and thought perhaps Pied Wagtails which do suddenly go to roost in trees, however some research said that Martins do roost in trees during migration by quickly setting down in a tight group. It was too fast to know for sure what these birds were though.

Nature notes

Sat 6th not seen a Swift for about a week now.

Wed 10th 'other/ opposite' Forestry dusk 20 - 25 H Martin flew around in quite a tight bunch which is unusual as normally they are more apart. Goshawk I think glimpsed several times as it kept taking off ahead of us as we walked along (grey- blue uppers and a bit bigger than a buzzard?).

Fri 12th quite a large bat flew over high above the garden going more or less due north, it was n't a Noctule as they have more chunky body this was slimmer but long winged (reminded me of a Greater Horseshoe we saw high above Brandon Marsh in the mid 1970s).

Mid month: the large pond below the church which when full takes some 3 feet has now almost completely dried out, it came close in Summer 2018 but was not completely dry.

From mid August large gatherings of Swallows which they tend to do before the majority head south (seen 30 to 40 together).

Sat 27th Forestry: quite a few Butterfly on profuse Heather along with Bees and other winged insects. Butterflies seen Painted Lady, Small & Large Tortoiseshell, Peacock.

Tue 30th Merlin's Walk, Carmarthen is a good place for House Martin nests (they use the bends in downpipes above the row of shops. Three nests this year all now seem unoccupied (they were actively feeding chicks in late July).

Fewer H Martin by month end it seems, quite a few Swallow though.

Summer 2022

Dry and warm; sunshine generally above average

The Midlands experienced a very good Summer being very warm and dry/ very dry; WW had a warm one with most places below average rainfall. Sunshine ranged from around average to sunny for the E Midlands. Summer 2022 will be remembered for the record breaking heat in July when a few places topped 40c and most places broke long- standing heat records.

Here at Lwn the Summer started with a rather wet June, then a rather dry and warm July ending with a very dry, warm and sunny August.

Coventry saw all 3 months of well below average rainfall, June there was fairly warm and slightly sunny, July warm and slightly sunny, then August very warm and sunny.
