2014 detailed weather summaries Llanwnnen

January 2014

Very wet and mild; snow-less

The very unsettled, mild and wet weather of mid to late December continued almost relentlessly throughout January. This was the wettest January since 2008 (238mm) but the mildest only since 2012 such is the regular recurrence of mild January's.

1st – 8th: A continuation of the deeply disturbed, wet and at times very windy weather of the second half of December. Plentiful showers and longer spells of rain, very heavy at times. Hail and thunder quite a feature, I have never known 3 days of thunder in the whole of January before and we got that within the first week of this month! Mild or very mild with the SW flow and some strong gusts at times, the highest of the month being 58mph on the 6th. A generally cloudy spell this although 2nd was bright.

9th – 11th: A much drier, quieter interlude, Some sunshine with temperatures nearer normal and just a few showers. Air frost on the 10th.

12th – 18th: Mostly mild with rain or showers at times, some heavy, but amounts not excessive. Mostly cloudy, although clear spells by night permitted a couple of air frosts. Quite windy.

19th – 23rd: Rather cold to average temperatures and some further night frosts. Rain or showers at times, mostly cloudy

24th – 26th: Mild, windy and dull with rain or showers, some heavy

27th – 31st: Colder but still close to average temperatures, further showers or rain at times, however the 30th was a dry and cold day, the coldest day of Winter to date although the maximum was 3.7c. Fittingly, a very wet and windy finale to January with the 31st seeing 20.7mm rain making it the wettest day of the month.

February 2014

Exceptionally wet, mild

This was one of the wettest Februaries locally on record, 213mm of the total falling in the first half, with a drier but nonetheless wet second half. It was the wettest of any month since November 2009 (309mm). It was the third successive month above 200mm. As with the whole of Winter 2014 there was a total absence of hard frosts or significant wintriness with no lying snow and only occasional falling sleet. Although a mild month there was no really mild weather the highest readings of the month being 10.4c (18th and 27th).

1st – 14th: Very disturbed, exceptionally wet and with strong winds. A succession of deep lows crossed the UK through this period, bringing unusually low pressure, it got down below 970mbar on 3 separate occasions, and with the months lowest pressure of 963mbar 14th. Frequent bouts of heavy rain, 9 days in this fortnight over 10mm, 5 over 20mm and 3 over 25mm, with the wettest day of the month being 32.2mm 14th. Temperatures close to or a little above average with some slight frosts. Winds topped 40mph on 7 days, the highest gust of 61mph being on the 12th. Often rather cloudy but with some sunny intervals.

15th – 22nd: Late on the 15th the barometer rose above 1000mbar for the first time since the 3rd after 12 day spell. Mild and unsettled with rain or showers at times but drying out between times. Relatively a much drier period with more 'normal' unsettled conditions, and lows now tracking north of the UK. Still, most days saw at least a little rain, but amounts much lower, and the wettest day in this spell saw only 13.8mm (17th). Sunny intervals with the 16th being a nice sunny day. Maxima getting above 10c at times although there were a few more slight frosts, the lowest reading of the month being -1.9c on the 16th.

23rd – 28th: Mild and very unsettled with spells of rain or showers, heavy at times. Strong winds at times. Some sunny spells

March 2014

Mild and fairly dry

Generally mild, nothing especially cold, no snow, although frosts were quite frequent with 13 air frost, as many as in January and February 2014 combined. A welcome relief from the rains, with just 68mm it was the driest month since last July (41mm). Quite sunny with an estimated 127 hours.

1st – 6th: Unsettled with rain at times and quite windy. Quite mild but with some frosts. Rather cloudy but some sunny intervals

7th – 15th: Dry and mild to very mild. High pressure close by UK, a very sunny spell with temperatures at times very high for March, the warmest being 17c 9th, several days having almost unbroken sunshine. Strong winds on 7th and 8th became generally moderate breezes. Often clear by night too so that frosts quite prevalent, the low of -3.6c 14th this the lowest reading since November (-7.3c).

16th – 19th: Mostly dry, bar showers 18th, cloudier and at times quite windy, just a few sunny intervals. Temperatures average to mild

20th – 24th: Cool and quite windy, showery, hail, sunny spells between. Frost by night, min -3.9c 24th.

25th – 28th: Average temperatures, often dry, just a few showers and decent sunny spells. Slight frosts by night.

29th - 31st : Warm with sunny spells; very warm 30th – maximum 20.6c not quite as high as in March 2012 (20.9c). Thunder then rain cooled it down later on 31st.

May 2014

Dull and wet but mild

Overall an unsettled but warmer than average May this. There was a short dry, very warm and quite sunny spell mid month, but with otherwise mediocre and, at times, wet weather.

1st – 4th: Mainly dry after a little rain 1st. Mild with a few sunny intervals

5th – 13th: Rather cloudy spell with rain at times, some heavy. 17.4mm 10th. Temperatures close to average but cool 10th/ 11th maxima around 13c. It was also quite windy at times.

14th – 18th: Dry and warm/ very warm with plenty of sunshine. High pressure over southern UK some decent sunny periods, and quite high temperatures by day but some clear, cool nights. 15th to 18th all reached above 20c, there were 2 likely ground frosts on 14th and 17th when it got down close to 2c, although I did not have a thermometer on the lawn and was not up early enough to witness this!

19th – 21st: Warm, and unsettled with some showery rain. It continued warm, the months highest reading of 22.4c 19th. The 19th also saw several thunderstorms pass by, with some much more distant ones just after midnight which nevertheless produced spectacular lightning. However, rainfall amounts during this period were only small and 21st was dry and sunny.

22nd – 25th: Dull, rather cool and unsettled. Less than one hours sun in total for these 4 days, with heavy rain at times, the months highest daily fall of 17.5mm being on 24th.

26th – 31st: Mostly dry and sometimes warm, limited sunshine. A few spits and showers but only a few sunny intervals, light winds.

June 2014

Warm and rather dry

An unsettled, very dull and quite wet start to June but a big improvement from 11th, it was then mostly dry, warm and quite sunny through to the last week. In spite of this consistent warmth, absolute maxima unremarkable and it did not exceed 24c. Estimated sunshine at 187 hours would be above average in spite of the very dull start. Quite a high incidence of fog (6 days) although none of it lasted until 0900 GMT.

1st – 10th: Unsettled, very dull and at times wet with showers and some longer spells of rain, wettest day 17mm 4th when it was also notably cool, just 11.7c the 'high'. No day had more than 6 hours sun during this early part of the month, the total for the first 4 days being below an estimated 2 hours! Although often cool to 5th, temperatures then recovered to the rather warm category and it managed 22.7c 6th which was largely dry. It was also quite windy at times.

11th – 25th Mostly dry, became warm and quite sunny. With high pressure often close to the UK this was a fine, Summery spell. Temperatures mostly above average and often warm, although it never exceeded 24c, and the month's high reading was 23.4c 25th. There was no measurable rain from 16th to 25th a total of 9 days and the longest dry spell since last July (20 days). Nights were chilly at times, the lowest being 3.5c 22nd

26th – 28th : Turned unsettled with some showery rain at times to 28th but not large amounts, some sunny intervals, and fairly warm

29th/ 30th: Dry with sunny spells temperatures average/ warm. However 2.4c minimum 30th - this though not so unusually cool for June, in fact an air frost occurred as recently as June 2011 (-0.2c 12/6/2011).

July 2014

Very dry, warm and quite sunny

An excellent Summer month with lots of dry and warm weather. The second half was very warm and sunny with the hottest spell of weather since July 2013. It was the driest July since 2006 (30.4mm) and driest month of any name since March 2012 (28mm) the total rainfall of 34.6mm being a mere 34% of the local LTA. There was a high incidence of early morning fog - 8 mornings although none of it lasted until 0900 GMT (the webcam helping considerably with early morning fog observations!)

1st – 2nd: Dry, warm and quite sunny.

3rd – 8th: Unsettled, some rain or showers with cool to average temperatures, apart from a sunny 6th it was a rather cloudy spell. However some very cool and clear nights with minima of 3.2c and 4.2c on the 6th and 7th respectively

9th – 11th: Dry and became warm and quite sunny after a cool 9th.

12th – 16th: Rather cloudy with a little rain at times, temperatures close to average

17th – 22nd: Warm or very warm, mostly dry with sunny intervals/ spells. Spectacular thunderstorm in the early hours of 18th but little rain, and again a little distant thunder heard 19th. Notably warm night of 18th with 17.8c being the highest minimum at this site in 9 years observations (previous record 17.2c).

23rd – 26th: Dry, hot and sunny, the hottest weather since July 2013. 28c exceeded each day peaking at 29.5c 25th. At least the nights got down below 15c through this hot spell.

27th – 31st: Mostly dry and rather warm with sunny spells. Temperatures returned closer to average to end the month, still some very pleasant weather and the only rain being in the form of showers 28th. 30th was a warm and quite sunny day. Showers in the early hours of the new month took the rainfall total above July 2006's 30.4mm and so it was prevented from being the driest July (SRB 2006).

August 2014

Cool and rather wet

Coming after the preceding rather good Summer months, August must have seemed disappointing for many with its consistently below average temperatures and plentiful showers and rain. It was notably cool after the 11th with 19c (average) not being attained again until 28th (19.5c), 20c was not reached between 12th and 30th, a 3 week spell! Rain-wise, although wet, it was not as wet as August 2012 (159mm). Rainfall being spread quite evenly through the month, no dry spell lasted longer than 3 days (6th – 8th). Sunshine at an estimated 159hours was slightly below average.

1st – 5th: Mixed, sunny intervals, rain or heavy showers 1st and 5th otherwise mostly dry. Temperatures around average to quite warm.

6th – 9th: Mostly dry and rather warm with sunny spells, warmest day of the month 24.6c 9th.

10th – 18th: Unsettled and cool; spells of rain or showers, some very heavy, especially morning of 14th when the rain rate reached 123mm/ hour. Thunder 10th. Sunny intervals with 15th a dry sunny day.

19th – 24th: Very cool with sunny spells and some showers. A notably cool spell for August/ Summer, nothing higher than 17.1c, and the mean maximum being 15.8c, unusually cool, especially given it was not a wet spell and most days saw decent sunny spells! Coolest days were 19th and 20th at max 15.2c. Nights also very chilly, a touch of grass frost measured night of 21st with an air min of 2.6c, and 4 other nights falling below 7c.

25th – 31st: Often rather cool, some rain or showers but with decent dry interludes. Apart from very heavy downpours in the early hours of 26th this was a reasonably dry spell with only small amounts of rain. Nights were appreciably milder than the previous few weeks, none falling lower than 9c. Sunshine rather restricted until the months final day which saw sunny periods.

September 2014

Exceptionally dry; warm and sunny

This was the driest September on record locally (11mm at nearby Llanybydder in 1986) and the driest of any month in my 12 year record locally (April 2007 14.4mm). A fine and warm start to Autumn, although no great heat the dryness was exceptional. Winds were notably light this month, the highest gust prior to final day being 19mph (gusts of 24mph on 30th) and the mean speed for the whole month a mere 2.8mph. It was also a sunny month with an estimated 174 hours

1st – 5th: A little rain and drizzle to 0900 1st then dry. Cool but eventually sunny 1st the weather then warmed up with sunny periods. Chilly night of 1st minimum 1.8c but not quite a ground frost.

6th – 16th: Dry and often warm with plenty of sunshine. Nights on the other-hand were often cool with some fog forming by some dawns yet always clearing by 0900.

17th - 19th : Warm or very warm and quite sunny, warmest day of the month 24.4c 18th. The sub Tropical air origin meaning nights were warm and quite sticky, the mildest night of the month being 15.0c 18th/ 19th on which rather frequent sheet lightning was observed to the ESE but with no thunder heard.

20th – 22nd : Rather warm and dry, sunny at times

23rd – 26th: Mostly cloudy and cooler, just a little rain at times so ending a 22 day drought (1st to 22nd ).

27th – 30th: Mostly dry and warm, some sunny spells and a few showers

October 2014

Very mild but quite wet and rather cloudy

After the exceptionally dry weather of September normal service was resumed for October. Much of the rain fell in the first 17 days with just 32mm in the last fortnight. The month was very mild, with the second half, unusually for October, being marginally warmer than the first. The most notable aspect of the month was the exceptional warmth on the 31st, both minimum and maximum being the highest recorded for so late on in the year. Estimated sunshine at 72 hours was some 20 hours below average.

1st – 3rd: Dry and rather warm with some sun. Septembers fine spell did at least last into the first few days, however the night of 1st saw a slight air frost – the first of the Season.

4th – 10th: Showers and longer spells of rain, some very heavy, sunny spells between. 8th/ 9th was exceptionally thundery, frequent storms and torrential downpours giving a total fall of 31.6mm. Temperatures rather cool to average and sometimes windy.

November 2014

Mild; wet first half then rather dry, quite sunny

November 2014 saw above average temperatures and average rainfall (97%). The first fortnight was very wet having 120.3mm. Although usually on the mild side, it was only the mildest November since the very mild November 2011. Nothing milder than 14c however some nights were very mild indeed seeing the daily maxima. There was some colder weather briefly towards the month end with a couple of sharp frosts. An estimated 80 hours sun total making it quite a sunny November (average 55 hours approx)

1st – 2nd: Mild and windy with rain or showers but some sunny intervals

3rd – 6th: Sunny spells, often dry but some showers. Temperatures around average but slight night frosts, and the high of just 8.6c 4th was one of the coolest days of the month. 5th was a lovely sunny day – an estimated 8 hours sun making it the sunniest day since September 22nd.

7th – 14th: Unsettled showers and longer spells of rain, some very heavy. Often cloudy but some sunny intervals, 14th was windy with gale gusts. Mostly mild, very mild indeed on the night of 13th when the temperature exceeded 13c.

15th – 20th: Often dry and bright, just a little rain and a few light showers, especially early 17th. Fairly mild but with a slight frost night of 17th.

21st / 22nd: Mild with rain at times, temperatures close to 13c in the early hours of 22nd
and again afternoon

23rd – 27th: Rather cold with some sharp frosts. At last an Autumn cool down -5.2c early 25th colder than any official UK station as was the previous nights -4.8c! Some sunshine by day but chilly, 5.8c maximum 25th the coolest day of the month.

28th – 30th: Mild and dry with sunny spells. A lovely end to the month, it felt unseasonable on 29th with a 13c high and almost 6 hours sunshine!

Autumn 2014

Very mild and rather dry

Had September been average rainfall then the season would have been on the wet side instead of dry. Consistent mildness throughout only brief cool spells. October (8.2c) had higher mean minima than September (7.8c).

December 2014

Changeable and sunny; near average temperatures and rainfall

Although rainfall was close to average it was the driest December since 2010 (52mm). The cold snap at the end of the month took temperatures down to average after it had looked like being a rather mild month for the most part.

1st – 6th: Rather cold with some sharp frosts, lowest reading of the moth -6.3c 4th. 2nd and 3rd sunny otherwise rather cloudy with some rain or showers

7th – 18th: Unsettled with variable temperatures. A spell of alternating Tm and Pm air as active frontal systems crossed UK. However it was never really cold with just a few slight frosts. Often cloudy but sunny spells some days. Frequent rain or showers, heavy at times with hail, and often quite windy although no especially strong winds. Wettest day of the month 25mm 11th. Very mild night of 18th/ 19th min 10.9c.

19th – 23rd: Mild or very mild and rather cloudy, only a little rain at times.

24th – 27th: Colder but still around average sunny intervals and showers but wet and windy 26th
when it briefly turned mild. Rather cold with hail and probably sleet showers 27th
(strongly suggested by radar early that evening along with temp below 2c and low DP, and especially as a thin snow cover existed at nearby Cwmann 29th).

28th – 30th : Cold, sunny and frosty. High pressure close to the SW giving a fine but often cold spell with some severe frosts. Coldest night of 2014 28th minimum -8.4c. Almost unbroken sunshine made December a sunny month overall. Pressure peaked at 1043mbar 29th the highest level since February 2012.

31st: Mild and rather windy and eventually drizzly

2014 Summary

Very mild and rather wet; sunshine average; lack of snow; thundery

No month of 2014 had a mean temperature below the average, nothing too extreme heat wise though, the highest reading of the year 29.5c in July. No hard frosts occurred until December when the years lowest reading -8.4c was recorded, there were no ice days in 2014. After the very wet January and February subsequent months saw ordinary levels apart from a very dry September although overall the year was wet still. It was the wettest year since 2008 (1553mm) just pipping 2012 (1525mm). 2014 saw no lying snow at all and only a little sleet fell from the sky in February and December. Thunder frequency was the highest in the record a total of 13 days heard.
