February 2012

Mostly cold and frosty to the 11th; thereafter it was mild or very mild. Rainfall was well below average.

The two distinct phases resulted in average temperatures overall. The third and final month of the Winter saw no lying snow again. Not checked back, but I doubt many months in history have had mean pressure above 1030mbar?

1st – 3rd: Very cold, with sunny days and frosty nights. The coldest temperature of the Winter minimum of -10.2c was on the 3rd.

4th- 6th: Hard frost again 4th, then it became less cold with sleet and rain. Mostly dry a few sunny intervals 5th and 6th.

7th- 9th: Cold again, generally dry and frosty. Rain did arrive later on the 9th.

10th and 11th: Rather cold and cloudy with rain at times.

12th-22nd: Mild and unsettled, rain or drizzle at times, and plenty of cloud. Heavy rain fell on the 18th.

23rd- 29th: Very mild and mostly dry. Rather cloudy. There were though slight frosts and sunny spells the weekend of the 25th and 26th.

March 2012, Llanwnnen, Lampeter, Ceredigion

Very mild and very dry

The driest month since April 2007 (14mm), and slightly drier than March 2011 (28mm) and less than 1mm fell in the final 2 weeks. Very mild too, in fact with average maxima of 13.9c which is higher than the April mean. An exceptionally warm and sunny spell occurred towards the end, with temperatures close to 70f (21c), and not far off the all time March record. No sleet or snow fell at all, quite unusual for this month.

1st- 2nd: First two days were dry, and after ground frosts, and fog 2nd, some sunny spells; Very mild.

3rd- 7th: Unsettled and quite windy, rain or showers at times, sunny spells too. Temperatures close to average, but cool on the 4th.

8th- 15th: The Azores high pressure gradually transferred across England and east into the North Sea. Mostly dry but rather cloudy, even some drizzle at times. Mist and fog quite a feature 12th- 15th. Mild, and became very mild on some of the brighter days.

16th- 17th: Mild and rather windy with a little rain at times, also a little sunshine.

18th- 21st: High pressure in charge again. Dry with some sunny spells. A sharp frost on the 19th, down to -4c, but otherwise fairly mild.

22nd- 28th: Very warm/ exceptionally warm: Dry and mostly sunny. Near record March temperatures, exceeding 20c for 4 consecutive days, the peak high’s being 20.9c on both the 26th and 27th. A gentle continental flow brought the warm air about a high over the North Sea. The warmth of the day did not prevent slight frosts given March has long nights still.

29th-31st: Much cooler, some more frost, but remained dry. A sunny 29th then it was rather cloudy and breezy.

April 2012 Llanwnnen, Ceredigion

Cool and wet; plenty of April showers

No further hints of Summer after the unseasonable warmth of late March and we did not reach 60f until the final day. It is quite unusual for April to average out colder than the previous month of March, and this year by well over a degree. Plenty of useful rain after the dry start to 2012, this was the wettest April since 1998 which had 186mm at nearby Lampeter University.

1st- 2nd: Dry with sunny spells after frost

3rd- 4th: Became very cool and windy with some rain, maximum only 4.9c on 4th.

5th- 6th: Mostly dry, severe frost 6th, minimum -6.0c

7th- 10th: Very unsettled, rain and showers, some heavy. A little sunshine at times, temperatures near average

11th- 12th: Llanwnnen dodged the April showers for a couple of days giving sunny periods with near average temperatures

13th- 16th: Some sun with showers, some heavy, cool to average temperatures, frosts overnight.

17th- 26th: Very unsettled, rain or showers at times, some heavy. Windy at times; near average temperatures and a few more frosts. Pressure fell down to 975mbar on the 18th the lowest level for 17 months.

27th- 30th: Mix of very cool and quite mild conditions. There was some further rain at times, and last two days saw strong winds. We missed the heavy rain on the 29th with the north-east winds creating a rain shadow over Ceredigion, just 5mm falling here, while some other parts of Wales saw almost 2 inches (50mm). Highest temperature of the month on it's final day was just 16.3c.

May 2012

Overall a rather average month: rather cool but then a very warm last week
A largely nondescript month with mostly cool and sometimes damp conditions, was remedied by some unusual May warmth and sunshine near the end. The high of 28c on the 25th being just short of the all time Welsh record for the month. Nothing else so noteworthy with respect to either temperature or rainfall, which ended up rather below average.

1st – 10th: Changeable with some rain at times but some sunny intervals too. Temperatures cool to average.

11th – 13th: A transient high pressure brought a short dry interlude with sunny spells. Cool with ground frosts by night, as low as 0.4c 13th.

14th- 15th: Rain and showers, plenty of hail, cool and windy.

16th – 18th: Mostly dry and milder, sunny intervals. Further ground frosts by night.

19th – 21st: Dry and became sunny with temperatures around average.

22nd – 30th: Clear with another ground frost 22nd, this heralding a prolonged warm to hot spell for the end of May. Mostly sunny with mild nights after 22nd. Unusually warm for May in west Wales during the 25th and 26th, both days exceeding 80f, the highest reading of 28.1c on the former, just short of the record of 29c for the Principality.

31st: A much cooler, dull and damp finale to the month.

June 2012, Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales

Very unsettled, exceptionally wet, quite cool and dull

Frequent rains in a very low pressure dominated month. Perhaps the wettest ever for this area, much wetter than 2007 (186mm), and the only comparable month I can find is June 1982 when 213mm fell at Carmarthen. Although a cool and quite a dull month, not as poor as further north and east. A remarkable month for rainfall, 3 days with over 1 inch falling, 5 with over 20mm, and 8 over 10mm.
.
1st / 2nd: Warm with sunny intervals, rain later 2nd

3rd – 8th: Cool and very unsettled. An unusually deep Summer low brought periods of heavy rain during 7th and 8th, almost 60mm falling, and gale force winds 8th, which was especially cool, no higher than 11c during the day time.

9th – 13th: Relatively dry interlude, a few showers with some better sunny spells, and average temperatures.

14th – 17th: Another deep Summer low crossed the UK, bringing a second notably wet spell, this time with 70mm in 72 hours. Cool to very cool, dull and windy too.

18th – 20th: Mostly dry and bright with temperatures up to average, Rain late on 20th.

21st – 24th: Unsettled, rain at times, heavy 21st, mainly cloudy and rather windy and cool.

25th - 27th : Became warm and mostly dry with sunny spells

28th -30th: A warm humid morning 28th, but then cooled off to a rather cool end to the month, with rain or showers at times. Rather windy.

July 2012, Llanwnnen, Ceredigion

Unsettled and rather wet, fine warm spell 21st – 26th. Near normal temperatures

A poor Summer month, redeemed somewhat by one fine and warm week towards the end. Most of the rainfall was during the first 18 days, all of which had at least a trace deposited in the rain gauge. Only half as wet as June though.

1st – 6th: Mostly cool and very cloudy with rain at times; a mostly dry and brighter 5th though.

7th – 11th: Sunny intervals but still with some rain or showers from time to time. Rather warm 7th but became very cool.

12th – 18th: Very chilly night the 12th down to just 5.2c. Unsettled and quite cool, spells of rain and showers, heavy at times, sunny intervals between times.

19th – 26th: Dry with sunny spells, warm to very warm. Peak temperature 26.5c on the 24th.

27th – 31st: Rather cool, mostly dry with sunny spells. A 9 day dry spell ended with a few showers on the 28th – this the longest dry spell since March. Rain on the final day.

September 2012 at Lampeter, Ceredigion

Very cool: Dry first half then unsettled

Only small amounts of rain with just 14mm for the first half, and in spite of a wet second half the average (approx 100mm) was still not attained. Some warm weather during the first 8 days, but no real heat, then maxima almost exclusively below average to the month end, with some very cool days indeed. It was probably the coldest September since 1994.

1st -8th: Often warm and dry with sunny periods.

9th – 22nd: Rather unsettled and cool, mostly light rain or showers at times. Seasons first air frost 22nd, minimum of -0.7c.

23rd – 26th: Very cool with spells of rain, heavy at times. The offshoot of hurricane Nadine bringing very disturbed weather with pressure below 990 mbar for 48 hours. Maxima below 11c on both the 23rd and 25th – the lowest in September for many years, perhaps back to 1986.

27th – 30th: Cool and rather unsettled with rain at times. Bright and dry 29th.

November 2012

Cool and rather wet

A consistently unsettled month, often on the cool side, with only brief milder interludes. The most notable aspect was the very wet weather with localised flooding towards the end, when over 4 inches fell in the 7 days of 19th to 25th. There was quite a high incidence of frost for November with 12 sub zero nights, the lowest being -7.5c on the 29th.

1st – 4th: Very cool and unsettled; rain or showers, some heavy. Sheet lightning observed on the evening of the 3rd but too distant to hear thunder. Touches of frost by night.

5th – 8th: Fairly dry, just a little light rain or drizzle at times with near normal temperatures.

9th – 12th: Unsettled again with further rain or showers at times, some heavy. Mild 12th.

13th – 15th: Mainly dry and mild, cold with frost and fog 15th.

16th – 26th: Very unsettled with spells of rain and showers, very heavy at times with localised flooding. Windy at times with gales 22nd. Temperatures varying between cool and very mild with lows crossing the UK; a few frosts, one hard one 18th, minimum -5.2c.

27th – 30th: Turned cold but dry. Sunny at times, some hard frosts, coldest being -7.5c on the 29th colder than any of the official weather stations in the UK even Scotland., with a maximum of just 1.8c

December 2012 Llanwnnen

Very wet with near normal temperatures

The wettest December since I began recording rainfall locally in 2003, and the wettest month of a soggy 2012! A cold and frosty first half was offset by a mild second half. No snow fell at all in December, and after 14th there were no air frosts even.

1st – 7th: Rather cold and unsettled rain and showers, heavy at times with hail. Sunny intervals too, but some quite sharp frosts when skies cleared overnight, as low as -5c. However the 3rd reached a mild 10c.

8th – 13th: Became very cold and mainly dry. Sunny periods with some hard frosts, lowest being -7.4c on the 11th, temperatures barely making it above freezing on the 11th and 13th.

14th - 31st: A protracted dull and really wet spell: very unsettled with showers and longer spells of rain, heavy at times, windy at times. It rained on each day from the 13th, and there were 11 days of 'heavy rain' that is having over 10mm. Not much sunshine during this period and with average to mild temperatures. Peak temperatures occurred on the 22nd and 23rd which both nudged above 12c, while the final night was the warmest with a low of just 9.2c
