Sat 1st Mildest NYD on record and both min (11.5c) and max (13.9c at 0420) beat the record at Lwn (max 13.0c 2016) other max Shawbury 15.3c, Trawsgoed 14.5c, Sutton Bonington 14.4c, Coleshill & Coventry 14.2c. Nottingham 14.0c, Aberdaron 13.0c. Note Bala in N Wales was at 16.5c during last night while a PWS at Llanfairfechan on the north Wales coast registered an amazing 19.3c at 0232 these temperatures due to the Foehn effect!

After the very mild start temperatures returned to around average or rather cold for the first week or so and rather unsettled:

Thu 6th sharp frost locally for the Midlands minima Pershore -5.7c, Coventry -4.3c, Shobdon -2.7c, Tirabad -1.5c,  Lwn -0.2c, Trawsgoed +0.6c, MH 5.3c.

A dull start to January for WW. High pressure took over after 10th sunny periods with overnight frost and at times fog:

Wed 12th quite a sharp frost locally, minima Lwn -4.6c, Hereford & Shobdon -3.0c,  CL & Pembrey Sands -2.1c, Nottigham +0.3c, Aberdaron 4.9c; foggy morning in places but plentiful sunshine for many, maxima Trawsgoed 10.7c, Coleshill 10.4c, Shobdon 9.9c, CL 6.8c, Lwn 6.7c.

Thu 13th again dry with frost and local fog, plentiful sunshine by day and mild locally.

Fri 14th another widespread frost with further mist and fog in places; coldest night of the Winter so far here at Lwn min -5.2c; other minima Tirabad -5.2c, Shobdon -4.9c, Trawsgoed -2.8c, CL -2.5c, Nottingham -1.6c,  Aberdaron 3.3c; many places sunny although persistant mist and fog locally, very mild for parts of sunny WW but very cold in the fog, maxima Swyddffynnon (Ceredigion) 11.7c, Trawsgoed 11.3c, Winterbourne (Brum) 8.6c, Lwn 7.9c, Mona 7.6c, Coventry 7.0c (sunny), CL 4.1c (often mist and fog),  CITE 1.3c (most likely foggy), Pershore College +0.3c (fog); sunshine Aberporth 7.5 hrs, Lwn est 7.5 hrs, Shobdon 6.9c, Coventry 6.4 hrs, Nottingham 0.8 hrs.

More cloud generally for a time around mid month though still largely dry with the influence of further high pressure but still sunny at times:

Mon 17th widespread frost then sunny (virtually unbroken in many places), here at Llanwnnen not a cloud in the sky all day, crystal clear skies giving almost 8 hours sunshine the most you can get in mid January; other sun totals Nottingham & Shobdon 7.5 hrs, Wellesbourne 7.3 hrs, Aberporth 7.0 hours, Coventry 6.7 hrs, Aberdaron 6.4 hrs, Shawbury 4.4 hrs: rather mild in most places by day max range 8 to 10c.

Tue 18th down to -5c in the Marches (Shawbury -5.2c & -4.9c Shobdon).

Anticyclonic conditions persisted into the final third too, though now often overcast and rather cold (inversion):

Fri 21st coldest night of Winter so far here at Lwn, min -5.8c, other minima Pershore & St Harmon, Powys -6.6c, Tirabad, Powys -6.0c, Pembrey Sands -4.5c, CL -3.9c, Coventry -1.2c, Nottingham -0.7c, Aberdaron 3.1c. A chilly past couple of days maxima generally 4 to 8c (lowest in the Midlands).

Mon 24th widely a cold day with sub 5c maxima, Lake Vrynwy in Powys an ice day max -0.1c (lowest in UK); other max Nottingham 1.9c,  CC & Shawbury 3.1c, Coventry 3.3c, Lwn 3.6c, Pershore College 4.6c, MH 6.2c.

Tue 25th cold for the Midlands in particular, no sun again, maxima Nottingham 1.8c, CL 2.4c, Sutton Bonington 3.3c, CC 4.9c, Hereford 4.1c,  Lwn 5.6c, Valley 7.6c.

Wed 26th milder, plentiful sunshine Midlands, rather cloudy WW; max in the 7 to 10c range.

Thu 27th very mild for most areas with sunny periods, max Pershore 14.8c (highest in UK), Mumbles 12.0c, Coventry 11.8c, Nottingham 10.7c, Aberporth 9.8c.



Nature notes:

Song Thrush singing early in the month and a Wren

With hardly any frost early in January there are still some flowers, new foliage and buds opening.

Wed 12th Lampeter after quite a sharp frost a nice sunny day, lots of Daisies in the Uni grounds along with various fresh leafage inc Rose (the Rose under our Holly also has new leaves); the Cherry by the Old Building has some blossom as it did in December while the Magnolia near it has swollen buds. Chiffchaffs reported seen in Ceredigion a few days ago (must be over- wintering ones)...

Thu 13th Blackbird singing beautifully at dusk from a roof near the Angel, Aberyswyth; estimated 10,000 in the Starling murmuration a fantastic show with clear, calm conditions.

First Primrose flower seen mid month University. Rooks getting active too.

Wed 19th Daffodil spikes seen to be up on the hedgebank opposite.

Foresty: stream of Redwing going to roost dusk and some Fieldfare.

Thu 20th noticed at dusk some Redwing & Fieldfare roosting in the tall trees at the end of the gardens.

Mid to late month Tits very active with Blue Tits frequently inspecting a neighbours nestbox that they have used over recent years also Great Tits calling 'teacher' occasionally.

Wed 26th first Snowdrops, a few along the main road by the bridge with more in the usual place on Neaudd Lane; Song Thrush singing as though it were April by the bridge; clacking dusk Blackbirds; Chaffinch giving its 'pink pink' call.

Thu 27th a Wasp entered the Bathroom on a mild, sunny afternoon; Snowdrops seen to be coming into bloom near the Fish & Anchor, Llanwnnen (usual bank).

Thu 27th Aberaeron great views of Dippers on the Aeron, the first was singing very well near the town centre bridge; getting lively bird activity through the trees along the old railway track, especially the Tits. The house (Dolaeron) near the Tennis courts that has Swifts is being re-roofed, I alerted the workers to this they said they will tell the owner.

First lambs seen off Neuadd lane month end.


January 2022 summary

Very dry and quite sunny for most; temperatures average to fairly mild:

Driest January here at Lwn since 2006 (64.6mm) while at Bablake it was the driest since 1997 (13.3mm). At Coventry also the calmest January since wind recording began in 1986. Parts of the East Midlands had a very sunny month over 100 hours. Most of the rain this month fell in the first 10 days (here at Lwn 81% of the months total with just 5% after the 11th at Bablake).
