First half of June dry for most of WW (apart from locally Pembrokeshire) and around average generally Midlands; temperatures close to average and many places rather dull. Better weather at times in the second half of June with some very warm and sunny spells:

Sat 18th warm night followed by a very cool day! Wet in places. Max widely just 13 to 16c and so 17c lower than the previous day for some such as Coventry; Swyddffynnon, Ceredigion 13.4mm rain wettest in Wales. Temperatures never really rose from the overnight values.

Thu 23rd very warm widely again and humid, more cloud and less warm S Mids; thundery showers affected Wales afternoon, we were caught in a torrential downpour with a few claps of thunder in Lampeter mid afternoon which gave 12mm in half hour back home; maxima Lwn 27.1c, Nottingham 26.7c, Trawsgoed 24.7c, CL & Coventry 23.8c,  Wellesbourne 22.3c, Aberporth 19.5c.

An unsettled and in places wet end to what had been a very dry month:

Sat 25th showery with thunder in places.

Sun 26th cool and windy with spells of rain, heavy at times for WW, in contrast dry with sunny periods much of the Midland; over an inch of rain (midnight - midnight) here at Llanwnnen.

June 30th A single clap of thunder here just before 1pm; locally some torrential downpours that gave over an inch (Pencader PWS 30mm) and for a few spots just north of Lampeter and south of Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn perhaps above 2 inches as judged by the radar evidence; here at Llanwnnen it was more steady rain that gave just 4mm.

Nature notes

Thu 2nd Forestry caught the Laburnums at their splendid bright yellow peak along the lanes, still some May blossom and Horse Chestnut 'candelabras'; Stonechats as usual and also Redstarts heard here; a cool calm evening, 1 Cuckoo calling quite close and seen within 100m; 1 Nightjar calling most of 2145 - 2215 (50m closest); Willow Warbler singing.

Cardiganshire hedgerows – beautiful mysteries

Sat 4th Long Lawford there are now 3 Swift boxes on the side of a house in Townsend Lane (opposite the park); a Swift seen to exit from a gap in a house roof adjacent to the shops (near the school).

Sun 5th a horrible overcast and very cool evening driving back to Wales; unusually 3 single Swifts flew across the motorway/ roads at 3 different locations en route; about 10 Swifts immediately W of Crickhowell; Swifts audible above Abergavenny.

Ash trees: Most (about 90%) of Ash appear affected by Die back now, not many as yet completely dead (no leaves) - perhaps 5%, with up to 10% virtually unaffected. Hopefully this sort of percentage will escape.

Mid month: don't seem so many Swifts and House Martins this Summer. The most seen in the village a screaming party of 7 Swifts, and 3/4 H Martins; plenty of Swallows though as usual for this area.

Tue 14th driving east about 10 Swift above Cwmann (just past Lampeter), a few at Crickhowell, then 3 as we arrived at Long Lawford evening.

Wed 15th 2 Swift darted over the LL garden in the morning, then amazingly a Red Kite viewed from the garden! Never seen one before in Warwickshire.

Fri 17th 5 Swift screaming LL near the garden.

Sat 18th Yellowhammer along the lane to the ford, LL - 'a little bit of bread and no cheeeeese' at just 15 metres.

Mon 20th village hall Swift chicks now audible on rear (east) side also part of an egg shell beneath.

Reduction in bird song evident even at the start of June after it peaked in mid to late May, Song Thrushes still performing well most dusks however.

Tue 21st update on the University boiler room Swallows: there is still a nest attached to the outside of the door and there are now chicks (at least 3 no more than a week old). It does look precarious and vulnerable being so low down (3 feet above the general surrounds) although nicely tucked away.

Sat 25th Forestry late afternoon: Redstart and Stonechats seen close up; Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers and a few Blackcap in song but lacking the urgency and quantity of April. At least 7 Newts in a deep puddle on the track up, it is likely they only just moved in as it would have been completely dried out until the rains returned a couple of days ago.

Month end: no local Blackbird song heard during the final week although they were still singing by Morrisons in Aberystwyth 29th; Song Thrushes still going quite well each dusk.
