Nature notes
Mon 1st Aberystwyth plenty of H Martins near Morrisons with over 20 nests (some fell off by now).
Start of month large flock of HS back garden focused on the southern thick overgrown hedge. Plenty of hirundines, one day 30 plus mainly Swallow feeding up over the field getting ready for the off. Robins have been back in song since mid to late August.
Tue 15th Forestry large flock of LTT, 30 plus sounded like, inc Goldcrests I think.
Mid month rebound from the drought this month with much grass and weed recovery almost as though in Spring mode again. Lawns being mowed again from the start of the month after almost 2 months left to go brown. Inc many Dandelions, much Clover, RWP, new ferns; everywhere nice and green again as it should be.
Not many hirundines about by mid month.
Sun 20th a couple of Swallows seen on drive to Mids.
Fri 24th Long Lawford 15 + Swallow in a group near the river at the old mill. Dad said they are in the old rectory near the ford but that the mill outbuildings were converted so no longer nesting there. Rooks & Jackdaws very active.
Late month more in the way of Butterflies esp Speckled Woods in the garden. Bees and Wasps enjoying Ivy pollen as these flower.
Wed 30th Newcastle Emlyn river walk around the castle, Kingfisher calling and seen rounding the far bend for almost 100m, then heard 10 minutes later sounded like it cut across the peninsular within the meander. Large flock LTT over 30 with some other spp mixed in inc a Treecreeper. Mix of quite a few dead, some almost dead and some hardly affected Ash trees in the area, dead ones being next to barely affected ones.
