Nature notes

Wed 4th at least 23 Ladybird on and near the fence end of garden.

Aberaeron first and earliest ever Chiffchaff this singing on the hill above the school (Goetre lane). Last year one heard from the garden 6th, guess any year now will hear one end of Feb? Also what may be my earliest Skylark heard too; Blackthorn blooming school.

Blackbirds and Thrushes in full song early month.

Fri 6th reports of House Martins at Llanelli wetlands today (first Sand Martins arrived in Ceredigion before the end of February!). Edit other posters reckon S Martins..

Sat 7th southern forestry continues to be felled. Skylark heard from the upper gate.

Tue 10th first Bluebells out wild garden, this is the earliest on record although they may not be natives?

Gave the Holly trees quite a severe pruning yesterday and found 2 old nests high up (one of these was Blackbirds last year with a chick having perished by falling to the ground shortly before fledging). It was in a thick mass of holly branches and Ivy (I did severely reduce the Ivy too but it will soon thicken up again).

Wed 18th Peacock butterfly midday enjoying the first 20c of the year. Several Chiffchaff audible from the car driving the lanes to Newquay this afternoon, then several more in Newquay itself. Yet to hear one from the garden. Still a few Snowdrops out in places.

Fri 20th first CC singing end of garden.

Sat 21st first Hoverfly. Some Ash in flower  which is very very early.

Neuadd lanes: several Chiffchaff heard, single Fieldfare, first countryside Bluebell (just one), many L Stitchwort (there were a few out late Feb along this lane).

Tue 24th 3 or 4 Chiffchaff walking through Alltyblaca.

Thu 26th first Blackcap Llanybydder this morning.

Mon 30th Aberaeron 4 or 5 Chiffchaff and a Blackcap. Lots of Wood Anemone.

Tue 31st Uni half dozen perished baby rooks, all small, most look under a week.

Month end, no more Snowdrops, many Daffs still in bloom, lots of Bluebells in the garden. Daffs over the road dying off. Hedgerows greening over.
