Unsettled start to November carrying on from late October, very wet for Wales:

Sat 1st thunder and lightning here just after midnight with a couple of torrential downpours, bulk of lightning 10 - 12 miles west and very vivid with low rumble of thunder following about a minute after. Another cell produced more 7 to 10 miles ESE towards 0100. Much of WW covered in sferics during the early hours.

Sun 2nd orographic rainfall over Snowdonia today, Cwm Dyli 112mm wettest in UK (also CC 92mm wettest MO), Lwn 22mm. Most of Mids little (under 2mm).

Mon 3rd Sunny for a time Mids then rain at times pm, wet day Wales (widely 1- 2 inches), but particularly Pembrokeshire & Carmarthenshire where there was flooding and 100mm locally. Officially wettest in UK Whitechurch 61mm; NRW's Gorslas (near Cross Hands, Carms) 79mm, Abergorlech 76mm, Cwm Dyli 74mm, also Rhos Ymryson 39mm near here. Lwn midnight total 36mm. Mids wettest Shobdon 19mm, Nott 13mm. PWS's in Cross Hands area well over 100mm (wettest 132mm). Some very mild maxima Pershore 16.7c, Cov 16c, Trawsgoed 15.1c, Lwn 13.8c (after min 12.8c).

Wed 5th exceptionally mild night for November, min 13.8c here at Lwn a record one (beating 13.4c 2015); other PS 13.9c, Trawsgoed 13.7c, Pershore 13.3c, CC & Mona 12.9c, Nott 12.3c. The rain eased away from Wales today after some parts 200mm in 3 days. Very mild rather cloudy, maxima CITE & Gogerddan 18.1c, Trawsgoed 18.0c, Pershore College 17.7c, CL & Cov 16.7c, Aberporth, Lwn & Valley 15.7c, Aberdaron 14.4c.

Thu 6th very mild night, minima MH 13.8c, CC 12.3c, Pershore 11.1c, Lwn 10.6c, Trawsgoed 9.9c, Shawbury 9.0c; very mild by day too (generally 15 - 17c), a little rain in places, rather cloudy maxima Pershore 17.7c, Porthmadog 17.3c, Lwn 15.7c again.

Fri 7th Pershore College max 17.2c (mildest in UK), generally 13 to 15c.

Thu 13th Coventry max 16.8c a date record (warmest place in Midlands). Plentiful sun for Mids too (Wellesbourne 6.3 hrs). 

Fri 14th Spanish named Claudia gave a very wet day over the Midlands and most of Wales, widely Midlands & E Wales having over 40mm; due to the ENE winds WW sheltered from the worst (most places here under an inch). Worst affected SE Wales & Herefordshire with over 4 inches Abergavenny area. We were due to drive to the Midlands today but thought better of it what with the Amber warning and flooding likelihood (indeed A40 at Raglan closed due to flooding this afternoon). Flooding this evening in Brum and Monmouth. Also strong winds in some areas today gusting over 50mph even at Trawsgoed (coming off the hills to east)

Sat 15th we only encountered one flood on the journey today this at Abergavenny, we were above the Monmouth flooding that was severe (worst in 40 or 50 years it said). Bablake total 0900 43.2mm 14th became the wettest November day on record in the city (beating 37.5mm 2012).

Mid month: Lwn very wet past month, over 310mm (cf Dec 2025 340mm).


First half of November very mild, wet or very wet and dull

Sun 1st - 15th: Llanwnnen 24 hrs, Cov 18 hrs. 


Wed 19th much colder northerlies wintry showers in places, snow reports parts of Cov & Warks this morning, also a streamer over Pembrokeshire...the 'Dangler'. Maxima just 2 or 3c over higher ground such as Stiperstones and just 4c parts of lowland Mids.

Thu 20th Dangler persisted all night and much of today too by midday it had already given around 2 inches (radar) from Fishguard/ Cardigan south to Saundersfoot/ Whitland. It also edged east as far as Newcastle Emlyn and Carmarthen overnight giving snow to these. Deepest snowfalls reported 7 or 8 inches between Crymych and Whitland which is unusual for November. However photos of 25cm. Snow even for coastal areas and on the beach at Tenby. Thundersnow reports Pembs too overnight. Maxima Scolton CP 1.4c (snow cover), CL 3.5c, CITE 4.8c, Lwn 5.9c, Pershore 6.5c, Valley 6.7c. MH 4c.

Fri 21st Lwn min -7.7c the coldest Nov night since 2010 (-13.7c 25th) also the lowest reading so early Season; other min Trawsgoed -6.6c, Pershore -5.8c, Cov -1.5c, Aberdaron 2.3c. Max just 4.3c Lwn but 7.5c at Trawsgoed and 9.3c MH (Mids 5 - 7c).

Sat 22nd Scolton Country Park (near Haverfordwest) 45.4mm wettest MO in UK today, also Maenclochog nearby 52.6mm, just 14m  here at Lwn. Most of the rain fell am.

Wed 26th hard frost in places, minima Lwn -5.8c, Shawbury & Shobdon -5.6c, Tirabad -5.5c, in contrast Aberdaron +4.5c.

Nature notes

Early month: Grass growing well with the very mild start. Flowering Strawberries, Ladybird (dark with orange markings on the Camelia. Plenty of Redwings flying over now after dusk...lots of Fox & Cubs in flower verge past Grannell lane. Celandine foliage Neuadd lane. Cuckoo Pint has come back as it did last Autumn after dying off late Summer. New Rose front. Generally life inappropriately springing with fresh growth, baby weeds and plants, some buds opening, this all often happens during a very mild November spell such as this.

Fri 7th bat low flying over us back garden bigger than a pipistrelle.

Sat 8th Eco had a Red Admiral settle on her arm a she waited at the bus stop.

Sun 9th 'Spring in November' or a 'second a Spring': Grannell lane profuse fresh growth past week or so when rather it should be dying off from Summer (nights are averaging above 8c and higher than the October mean). A few grasses in flower again also some Nettles, generally a carpet of fresh undergrowth such as it would be in April inc much Cow Parsley foliage. Wild Rose shoots have sprung up with fresh leaves, various flowerings still lots of Fox & Cubs inc new ones, Hazel and some other hedgerows buds starting to open. Knapweed about to bloom on the bank opposite hotel.  Song Thrush in decent though not full song dusk.

Mon 10th S Thrush at end of garden in good voice today. Neuadd lane notables plenty of Red Campion and Cranesbill in flowers, Cleavers are up (don't recall seeing them in November before?)  2 S Thrush singing dusk (inc ours).

Sat 15th M Thrush singing.

Mid month fresh growth and flowerings, much evident in Long Lawford inc Daisies. On the journey back remarkably near Leamington of dozens of Dandelion clocks with others in flower!

Fri 21st severe frost zapped quite a bit in the garden here while in Aberystwyth not hard enough (-3c) and still flowers on the go. Did not seem as many Starlings at the pier dusk est 5 -10000.

Late month first tiny Bluebell spikes making an appearance under Apple tree. Don't recall this happening g in November before although they were well up late December 2015. Fresh Honeysuckle leaves Neuadd lane. Still plenty of fresh growth remaining intact month end. Sheep over the road still enjoying freshly grown grass.


Summary November 2025

Wet or very wet for most; mild; rather dull/ dull.

Over twice the average rainfall in places, much of the Gower around average though. Here at Lwn it was the wettest of any month since Dec 2020 (283.7mm) and wettest November since 2009 (309.4mm). For Wales overall also the wettest Nov since 2009.

Here at Llanwnnen the wettest Autumn on record (beating 559.5mm in 2023). 

Derek said that Wales averaged 594mm this being the tenth wettest Autumn srb 1836.

All areas wetter than average.

All areas below average sunshine, locally very dull NW Wales.

Coventry had its dullest Autumn since 2001 (253 hrs).

Changeable start to the month:

Fri 3rd a wet and windy day, over 3 inches Snowdonia and quite widely an inch WW. Cwm Dyli over 100mm 24 hours to 8pm. Capel Curig 61mm wettest MO station today in UK, Cwm Dyli (just 3 miles to the SW) 77mm same period (midnight to midnight). Highest gust a not so unusual 85mph at Capel Curig.

Mon 6th first warm day for quite a while (since 21c in early September here at Lwn). Maxima Newport (Salop) 21.5c, Pershore 21.1c, Usk 20.8c, Cov 20.2c, Shawbury 19.0c, Trawsgoed 18.2c, Lwn 18.1c, CC 15.5c

Into the second week a mainly dry spell ensued lasting through mid month:

Sun 12th a rather warm and sunny afternoon for inland Ceredigion in contrast cool or very cool and cloudy Mids (thick fog below 100m on the webcams Coventry area til midday); maxima Swyddffynnon 17.3c (unusually the warmest spot in Wales today), Lwn 17.0c, Whitechurch 16.6c, Trawsgoed 16.4c, Nott 14.5c, Aberporth 12.0c, Aberdaron 11.7c, Shawbury 10.5c, Market Bosworth 10.3c, Coleshill 9.9c. High pressure inversion conditions caused poor TV reception at times today which is an unusual causation (almost always a transmitter fault).

Mon 13th bright and warm locally mid & N Wales, Gogerddan max 18.6c (warmest in Wales) cf a cloudy 15.9c here at Lwn. Mids generally below max 15c.


First half of October has been dry, rather mild and dull/ very dull for most. Parts of WW near average rainfall.

Sun 19th over an inch parts of SW Wales today, Tavernspite near Whitland (border of Carms/ Pembs) 47.2mm (second wettest gauge in UK); Lwn 16mm (midnight). Porthmadog max 17.4c warmest spot in UK today (Trawsgoed 17.1c, Lwn 15.1c, Cov 14.3c).

Thu 23rd French named storm Benjamin barely impacted the UK; very cool and wet mid Wales, around an inch much of Ceredigion. Here at Lwn the first proper hailstorm of the season 0930 followed by 6 hours almost non stop heavy rain, midnight totals Llanwnnen 33mm, NRW's Nant y Main 30mm, Cellan, Pwll Peiran & Pontrhydfendigaid all 26mm (all in Ceredigion). Llanwnnen then unofficial wettest spot in UK, Swyddffynnon 29mm official wettest in Wales today (2100). Coolest day of Autumn to date, max just 8.2c Lwn, other max Libanus 8.1c, Swyddffynnon 8.4c, Trawsgoed 9.2c, PS 11.6c, Cov & Shawbury 12.4c, Market Bosworth 12.9c,  Pershore 14.8c (mildest in UK).

Fri 24th Lwn 24 hour total 33.3mm much of which fell in 6 hours yesterday. A showery day, locally an inch, Swyddffynnon 22.2mm (wettest MO in Wales); sferics inland from Fishguard towards midnight during a persistent streamer into SW Wales.

Sat 25th showery for Wales again, few Mids; constant all day streamer into N Wales with the radar suggesting 3 inches inland from Llanfairfechan over Carneddau mountains (Cwm Dyli 45mm wettest of UK gauges).

Weather remained unsettled to month end:

Fri 31st some torrential downpours about today with local thunder. Sferics over Carms late morning while an Hinckley PWS caught 13mm in an hour mid afternoon. Here at Lwn may just about have heard a couple of distant rumbles however there was too much wind and background noise to be certain, also the nearest sferics were some 12 miles south so borderline audible. Squally thundery showers more widely for Wales during the evening and overnight, here at Lwn caught out letting the dog out 2300 by the heaviest of the year to date (100mm/ hour). Then vivid lightning every minute or two for 15 minutes some 10 - 12 miles to the west with low rumbles of thunder just after midnight (and into November), more to the east towards 0100 and further torrential downpours. Cellan (NRW) 33.4mm today wettest UK gauge (cf Lwn 21mm midnight). Scolton Country Park 13.2mm wettest MO gauge for Wales today (only until 2100).


Nature notes

Wed 1st Aberystwyth Peregrine Falcon often still on the air viewed from Constitution Hill.

Leaf fall underway from early month (particularly Ash, many of which are diseased).

Mid month pair of Starlings back next door a few times. Insects feeding off the Ivy pollen (inc Wasps, flies and Hoverflies, also a few Bees). Blackbird heard in faint song (like subsong) a few times.

Mon 13th Aberaeron Starlings quite vocal on boat masts.

Tue 14th first Redwing heard flying over this evening. 

Mid to late month: several Newts seen, one on the front lawn one evening. A few more Redwing heard flying overhead.

Month end: quite a few trees now devoid of leaves, particularly Ash, although Oaks retaining. Various Autumn blooms, Ox Eye Daisies on the corner junction, Red Campion Grannell lane, a few Dandelions, Fox & Cubs front garden.


Summary October 2025

Dull/ very dull with average or rather mild temperatures; rainfall varying between dry and wet.

Much of the Midlands below average rainfall

Many parts very dull half average or less.

Unremarkable temperature range, here at Llanwnnen highest reading a very modest 18.1c, lowest just -0.4c.

Coventry had its driest October since 2018 (43.4mm) and dullest since 1968 (39.5 hrs).
