Nature notes

Sun 1st first Celandine out end of garden.

Early Feb single Ladybird back garden one sunny afternoon.

Wed 4th many Daffs out promenade, just missed the Starling roost but seems much fewer than recent years.

Fri 6th first Daffs opening in the village by the crossroads.

Mon 9th southern forestry: they have been clearing up the Darragh windfall area at the top for a few weeks. Thousands of trees, they cleared most of the main track just a 30 yard stretch towards the gate blocked which was easy to bypass. Spoke with some of the men, they have had a lot of forests to clear some as bad as this one. He was surprised given the size of some of the trees that they succumbed, I told them many were 80 to 100 years old and so it was surprising they had not been felled half a century ago!  I asked was the timber still in decent condition having been laid over a year ago he said it had dried a bit but had not rotted but had it been left another year perhaps no good by then. Then spoke to one of the lorries about to load up with logs they were from Pentrilas near Hereford. Clearing this vast area much have disturbed wildlife such deer, also saw a Woodcock flying away from one of the last section that was being felled.

Sat 14th forestry has had a large central portion clear felled with no sign of them stopping! Shocked as it is almost unrecognisable and Gwylfa is now an exposed hill top lookout once more. Also they have cleared the other side of the track by the building. It is somewhat reminiscent of a post nuclear landscape hope they don't clear it all! Many of the trees just 10 or 20 years old but amongst older 30 or 40 year olds that were ready to fell.

Mon 16th forest worker (southern) told me when they have finished 9000 tons of timber would have gone (many thousand of trees) and that Caio forest was the worst with 40000 tons wind blow.

Sat 21st Toad front garden path this very mild damp evening.

Month end still plenty of Snowdrops, the earliest that came out January going over with still new ones just out. Most Daffs out now inc over the road perhaps the most so early (usually some out St David's). Hedges back garden leafing. Lots of Celandines out.
